Liverpool FC will hold talks with Barcelona on Wednesday after the Spanish giants finally made an approach to sign Luis Suarez.

The ECHO understands that Reds chief executive Ian Ayre has agreed to meet a delegation from Barcelona in London.

It will mark the start of negotiations between the clubs over a potential deal for the Uruguayan striker.

Ayre will also take the opportunity to step up Liverpool's pursuit of Barca attacker Alexis Sanchez.


Boss Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of the Chile international, who is valued at around £30million.

Ayre will spell out to the Catalans that there is no chance of Suarez being allowed to leave on the cheap –

despite his four-month ban from all football for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The Reds' owners remain adamant they don't want to sell and a transfer will only be sanctioned if Barcelona meet the valuation in the release clause

of the lucrative new contract Suarez penned last December. That figure is believed to be between £70million and £80million.

Sanchez could become a vital makeweight in the transfer if Barcelona agree to let him move in the opposite direction.

The 25-year-old, who has also attracted interest from the likes of Juventus and Arsenal, lit up the World Cup in Brazil prior to Chile's agonising exit on penalties to the hosts.





Barcelona's long awaited move for Suarez came after weeks of speculation with reports in Spain suggesting they have already agreed personal terms with the striker.

Liverpool were braced for an approach following Suarez's public apology for the bite on Monday –

something Barcelona had demanded from the player's advisers prior to them trying to secure his services.

Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta spoke of his admiration for Suarez at the Nou Camp following the unveiling of Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla.

“Suarez has shown he is humble enough to admit an error, which is very important,” he said.

“He has been humble enough to apologise to those he has affected because it happened in the middle of a festival of football. In this case it’s the best thing a person can do.

“Everyone knows that Luis is an excellent player. Everyone knows last season he played in various positions in attack, but everyone also knows that he is a Liverpool player.”

Croatia midfielder Rakitic added: “The fact he has had the character and the strength to go in front of everyone and say sorry says a lot about him as a person.

“I rarely say that I am wrong so this says a lot about him, he has shown the character and strength he has so he should be commended for that.

“Regardless of whether the club signs him or not, his quality is unquestionable.

He has shown a lot of quality with Uruguay and scored more than 30 goals (last season) with Liverpool, so he has the necessary quality to play for Barca.”

Zubizarreta did little to quell talk about the Catalans agreeing to sell Sanchez as he added:

“Regarding Alexis, there have been offers. We will try and find a solution best for everyone.”

Luis Suarez: Barcelona talks productive, say Liverpool

Liverpool have held "productive" talks with Barcelona over the proposed sale of striker Luis Suarez but no deal has been finalised between the clubs.
Reds chief executive Ian Ayre spent much of Wednesday in discussions with senior Barcelona officials in London.
The Reds remain adamant Suarez, 27, will not be sold for less than the release clause in his contract, believed to be between £70m and £80m.
"The talks held were productive," a senior Liverpool source told the BBC.
"There are sensible expectations on both sides.
"Further talks and discussions will take place but no deal has yet been finalised."


Suarez, who joined Liverpool for £22.7m from Ajax in 2011
and has four years remaining on his Liverpool contract, is serving a four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.
Barcelona are understood to want to pay closer to £60m for the player,
and any deal may include 25-year-old Chile winger Alexis Sanchez, who is also wanted by Juventus, in part-exchange.
However, while Barcelona are willing to include Sanchez as part of the deal, Liverpool do not see the forward's involvement as crucial -
and there is a growing sense at Anfield that Barcelona are close to offering a figure that the clubs can agree on.

Speaking at a media conference on Wednesday, Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said:
"This year we are going to restructure the team in depth and we are working on that.
"We have been working on that since February, but I can't reveal things we are doing.
"We have to be discreet - we can't give clues to other teams.
"We do have a lot of negotiations at a very advanced stage, but the World Cup is going on.
People are speculating about a lot of players at the World Cup, but there's a lot of different factors."
Pressed on Suarez, he said: "He's a great player, a global star and we want him to play as well as he's playing up to now. I'm speaking as a football fan.
"He's a player who needs to rebuild himself and get back to playing football."
Liverpool are pragmatic about Suarez's ambitions and are aware he would welcome a move to Spain, and particularly to Barcelona.

Luis Suarez's Anfield exit has moved a step closer after Liverpool FC held “productive” talks with Barcelona over a potential £75million deal.

Reds chief executive Ian Ayre opened negotiations with a delegation from the Spanish giants in London on Wednesday.

The ECHO understands that the discussions were amicable and more talks are set to take place over the coming week.

Barcelona's initial offer of around £60million fell well short of the Reds' demands of around £75million but it looks increasingly likely that an agreement will be reached

An Anfield source said: “The talks were productive with sensible expectations on both sides.

“Further talks and discussions will take place in due course. Nothing is finalised as of now.”

Ayre reminded Barcelona that Suarez is under contract until 2018 and made it clear that the prolific Uruguayan will only be sold on Liverpool's terms.

Despite the 27-year-old's four-month ban from all football following his bite on Italy's Giorgio Chiellini,

Anfield officials are adamant that if Suarez does go it will be for a fee that reflects his worth.

The Reds were prepared to keep last season's Footballer of the Year and give him the help he needed in the wake of his shameful conduct at the World Cup.

However, Barcelona's approach – coupled with the player's desire to move to the Nou Camp

and take advantage of the release clause in the lucrative contract he penned last December – led to them reluctantly agreeing to kick-start negotiations.

Boss Brendan Rodgers is determined to ensure there is no protracted transfer saga which disrupts the club's pre-season preparations.

During Wednesday's talks in the capital, Liverpool informed the Barca delegation, which included their director of football management Raul Sanllehi,

that they would accept £30million rated Chilean attacker Alexis Sanchez plus around £45million for Suarez.

However, the ECHO understands that securing the services of Sanchez isn't a deal breaker in the Suarez negotiations.

Sanchez is currently considering his options with reports in Spain suggesting he favours a move to Arsenal.



Liverpool would accept a straight cash offer for Suarez with Rodgers then given those funds to strengthen his ranks ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

Barca president Jose Maria Bartomeu has continued the club's public courting of the Reds' frontman by praising him for his apology to Chiellini.

“Luis has apologised and that is honourable, he said.

“He’s taken a step towards rehabilitating. The football world should support him and help him.

“Admitting you have done something wrong is very important. As a football fan I hope he can turn a corner.”
