Transfer News: Real Madrid sign James Rodriguez from Monaco in £63million deal



Real Madrid have signed Colombian star James Rodriguez from Monaco in a £63million deal.

The 23-year-old successfully passed a medical in Madrid this morning before agreeing a six-year deal and is scheduled to be unveiled in the Spanish capital this evening.

Rodriguez will join up with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema to provide a formidable attacking threat for the Champions League winners.

Rodriguez was one of the stars of the World Cup, scoring six goals for his country on his way to winning the tournament’s Golden Boot award.

The attacking midfielder scored the goal of the tournament at the World Cup with a stunning volley against Uruguay in the last 16.

He makes the move to the Spanish capital after spending one season at Monaco, whom he joined from FC Porto for £35million last summer.

Rodriguez scored nine goals and registered 12 assists for Monaco last season as they finished second in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain.

A Real statement read: "The player will be presented today, Tuesday 22 July, at 20:00 CET (7pm), in the Santiago Bernabeu's presidential box.

"Following that, James Rodriguez will take his first steps on the Santiago Bernabeu's pitch wearing the Real Madrid jersey

and will then answer questions from the media outlets in attendance in the press room."

A statement on Monaco’s official website read:

"The club would like to take the opportunity to thank James for the role he played in getting the club back to the Champions League and wishes him the very best for the future.

"The club had no intention to sell the player, however the time came when the solution of a transfer was considered to be the most beneficial solution for all parties.

"Monaco is proud to be a party to one of the most significant transfers in football history.

"Monaco is a club that will continue to grow and remains focused on the future. More than ever it has the ambition to strengthen the team and continue to progress for next season."

Rodriguez began his professional career with Colombian side Envigado before moving down to Argentinian club Banfield aged 17.

His performances for the Buenos Aires outfit attracted the attention of Porto, who signed him for £4million in 2010,

and three years later he joined Monaco for £38.5million after helping the Portuguese side win a hat-trick of league titles and the 2011 Europa League.

Real Madrid agree terms with James Rodriguez
The Colombia international is currently on holiday and hopes Monaco will complete the deal, allowing him to join Madrid on 1 August.




Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with James Rodriguez –
now the club needs only to close the deal with AS Monaco, who are asking 80 million euros for the highly-rated Colombia international.
Negotiations haven’t run smoothly but the operation could be completed earlier than anticipated if Madrid are able to offload Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain this week.
The 60 million euros gained from Di Maria’s move will go towards financing the capture of James Rodriguez.

Madrid have the word of the player and his agent, Jorge Mendes, who has negotiated an annual salary of 7.5 million euros for his client.
Dealing with Monaco however won’t be so easy. The club won’t be willing to let their star player leave without a battle
and according to ‘El Confidential’, Barcelona are also keen on signing the player but not this season – in 2015.
The Catalans would be willing to meet Rybolovlev’s asking Price of 90 million for the player, who insists he is only interested in joining Madrid.

AS understands that another player could enter the operation as a makeweight; Monaco have enquired about Pepe and Coentrao –
both options have been flatly refused by Madrid. But both appear to be agreed on Casemiro who, valued at 10 million euros,
would bring the fee for James Rodriguez down to around 70 million euros.

According to a report in Friday's edition of 'Le Parisien', Monaco are demanding ?85 million from Real Madrid for James Rodriguez.
The Colombian was one of the revelations at the World Cup in Brazil and is reported to have agreed terms on an ?8m-a-season five-year contract at the Bernabeu.

"Now it is up to Real Madrid and Monaco, where the Colombian is under contract until 2018, to thrash out an agreement on the transfer fee", claims the French newspaper. The story adds that the 23-year-old is "closer than ever" to joining the European champions and that 'Los Blancos' could seek to lower the price by including a player in part exchange.

French sports paper L'Equipe say the player is very close to the Spanish giants.
The team from the Principality are actively searching for a replacement, with ex-Real Madrid player Rodrigo in their sights.



James Rodriguez could be saying goodbye to Monaco on Monday, destination Real Madrid, according to French sports paper L’Equipe,
who say the player is very close to the Spanish club. This would mean the Colombian wouldn’t join Monaco’s tour in Miami
(they play on the 23rd against Colombian side Atletico Nacional), as was planned.
Monaco are currently in Barranquilla in Colombia, where they play a pre-season friendly against Atletico Junior on Sunday.

What is certain is that Monaco are actively seeking a substitute and Leonardo Jardim, their coach, has asked to bring in Rodrigo,
who played in Real Madrid’s youth set-up, and is currently at Benfica. Peter Lim, who owns his rights, tried to move him to Valencia but the deal hasn’t been finalised.
Rodrigo’s value is estimated at around 30 million euros.

According to L’Equipe, James will cost 90 million euros, which Madrid will try to reduce during the talks, and particularly by including players in the deal.
Monaco are in principle interested in signing keeper Diego Lopez, but he’s determined not to leave Madrid. And if he does his price is likely to be minimal.

The arrival of James Rodriguez at Real Madrid is tied to Di Maria’s departure.
PSG appear to be keenest to buy him, and Real Madrid are expecting 60 million euros for him.
