St Pauli: Surprise summons for Bruckner
St Pauli coach Holger Stanislawski will call upon a member of his club's press team to help fill a void in his squad this weekend.
Captain Fabio Morena broke his foot in training this week and will be out for six weeks, leaving Stanislawski short on numbers at the back for Saturday's Bundesliga visit of Hannover with six defenders missing for various reasons.
Therefore, he made an unexpected call to Hauke Bruckner, a trainee in the club's media department, to ask if he would mind making up the numbers.
"It was around 8:30 and I had just left my flat when my mobile phone started ringing," explained Bruckner in the Welt newspaper.
"At first, I thought that he wanted to inform me that that he was not happy with an autograph session, which had been arranged between two training sessions.
"He asked me if I was fit enough to take part in training as a player.
"I said yes and I was on cloud nine. I had never imagined anything like this."
Bruckner started working at St Pauli on an apprenticeship and has been appearing for their second team in the fifth division of German football, although he never expected to be considered for the first team.
But Stanislawski said he had no other choice.
"We were down to just four fit players - Carlos Zambrano, Ralph Gunesch, Moritz Volz and Jan-Philipp Kalla," he said.
"Now Hauke has joined us. He knows how things work here and can play centrally or wide in a back four."
The media officer could therefore make his Bundesliga debut this weekend.
