Source: Nesta expected to come out of retirement and join Chennaiyin FC The Abhishek Bachchan co-owned outfit has roped in the former Italy international and Montreal Impact center back to replace John Mendoza. The Indian Super League’s (ISL) glittering array of stars would get another late addition in the form of Alessandro Nesta, a source tells Goal.
The 38-year old is set to join Chennaiyin FC, which requested the ISL officials to seek a replacement for injured Colombian striker John Mendoza before the club played its 10th game of the competition against Mumbai City FC on Sunday.
Mendoza injured his hamstring in Chennaiyin FC's 3-1 victory over FC Pune City and has been ruled out of the competition.
Nesta last plied his trade for MLS’s Montreal Impact in 2013 where he helped the team qualify for the playoffs for the very first time in its history and thereafter, announced his retirement. The Roma native played 78 times for Italy and was part of the 2006 World Cup winning squad.
He started his professional career with Lazio before joining AC Milan. With the Rossoneri, he went on to play several titles, including two Champions Leagues, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup to name a few.
Chennaiyin FC remained unavailable for comment.
