Manchester City complete £24m David Silva transfer
Manchester City have completed the £24m transfer of Spain international winger David Silva from Valencia.
Silva, 24, had a medical on Wednesday before signing a four-year contract at City, where he hopes to earn Champions League qualification next season."I will be happy if at the end we are in the Champions League - or if we win a trophy," he told the club's website.
"My first target is to get into the team, and then to fight for the league and the other competitions."
Silva becomes City manager Roberto Mancini's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Hamburg's German international defender Jerome Boateng and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure from Barcelona as the big-spending Blues resume their quest to establish themselves among the Premier League's elite.
"Roberto Mancini and [chief executive] Garry Cook have told me we are building a very good team with some of the best players in the world and we are going to fight for honours," added the Spaniard.
Silva will not join up with his new team-mates until after he returns from a holiday in the Canary Islands following his World Cup campaign with newly-crowned champions Spain.
Despite his starring role in his country's march to glory at Euro 2008, where he playing five times and scored once, he was restricted to just two appearances for Vicente Del Bosque's side after starting in their opening 1-0 defeat to Switzerland.
Mancini, though, clearly holds his latest acquisition in very high esteem, hailing him as "one of the best midfielders in Europe".
Speaking in June when City revealed details of Silva's imminent arrival, Italian Mancini said: "I am so pleased he is coming to us, I think he can make a big, big impact.
"In signing David, we are showing the world that we are bringing the best players here and that we hope to compete to win the Premier League."
Silva began his career with Valencia, enjoying successful loan spells with Eibar and Celta Vigo before going on to establish himself as a key figure in Los Che's first team and becoming a regular member of the Spain squad. He made his international debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Romania on 15 November 2006 and has since gone on to play 38 times for his country, scoring seven goals.
Silva is the second high-profile summer departure from Valencia, who have qualified for next season's Champions League, but are in a dire financial situation, with debts reported to be over £400m.
Spanish international striker David Villa, 28, left Los Che to join Barcelona for £34.2m in May.
