Dutch match halted after fan incidentAMSTERDAM -- A Dutch cup match between Ajax and AZ Alkmaar has been halted 36 minutes in after an Ajax fan ran onto the field and tried to attack Alkmaar's goalkeeper from behind.
The keeper, Esteban Alvarado, saw the man approaching in time and skillfully tripped him. Then an enraged Alvarado kicked the fan twice on the ground. Referee Bas Nijhuis gave Alvarado a red card for violence. Alkmaar coach Gertjan Verbeek ordered his team to walk out in protest.
Ajax was leading the match 1-0 on a goal by Gregory van der Wiel. Ajax apologized for the security lapse Wednesday and identified the fan as a 19-year-old who had been drinking. The national soccer association director says he is not sure whether the game will be replayed.
