Darren Fletcher joins West Brom from Manchester United

West Brom have signed Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher on a free transfer from Manchester United.

The 31-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at The Hawthorns with a 12-month option.

West Ham were also interested in signing Fletcher, but a move to Upton Park broke down last weekend.

Albion failed in deadline day moves to sign West Ham striker Carlton Cole and Norwich defender Martin Olsson, but kept Brown Ideye and Graham Dorrans.

Fletcher made 342 appearances for United but started only five times for the club after Louis van Gaal took over as manager in the summer.

The Scot, who recovered from chronic bowel disease ulcerative colitis to resume his career in December 2013, had been at Old Trafford since he was a schoolboy and helped the Red Devils win the Premier League title five times.

But with his contract set to expire in the summer he was granted a free transfer to help him find a new club in this transfer window.

"This is a fantastic new challenge for me in my career," Fletcher told West Brom's website.

"I've spent my career at Manchester United and it's all I've ever known. But I felt it was the right time to move and I'm not sentimental about doing that."

Fletcher is the second player signed by West Brom head coach Tony Pulis following the £4.75m capture of winger Callum McManaman from Wigan.

The Scotland captain will wear the number 24 shirt for the Baggies.

Albion had hoped to sign Cole and Olsson on a busy deadline day, with Dorrans set to join Norwich and Ideye linked with a move to Qatari club Al Gharafa.

But Cole was called back to West Ham when they did not sign Tottenham's Emmanuel Adebayor, and Olsson failed to arrive for a medical on time.

Chairman Jeremy Peace said: "We did not get all the business done that we might have but we are thrilled to bring in a player and a character of Darren's calibre.

""We were disappointed for Carlton because he was also excited about joining us but for reasons which were beyond our control we could not complete the deal. The same can be said for the proposal involving Martin Olsson and Graham.

"But we have always maintained that January is a difficult time to do business and we are very happy with the deals we have done."

West Brom have contacted Manchester United about the possibility of signing Darren Fletcher, according to Sky sources.

The Scotland captain has had limited first-team opportunities under Louis van Gaal this season, starting just four times in the Premier League, and Albion have enquired about his availability.

Fletcher is United's longest-serving player having made his debut almost 12 years ago, and he counts five league titles and a Champions League winner's medal among his honours.

The 30-year-old midfielder has revived his career after a series of successful operations helped him overcome ulcerative colitis, an illness which kept him out for almost the whole of 2013.

Darren Fletcher could leave Manchester United during the current transfer window.

Fletcher has interested a number of clubs after successfully recovering from a long-standing chronic bowel condition.

The 30-year-old midfielder was named vice-captain when manager Louis van Gaal took charge, but his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Scotland international has only started five times this campaign.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis is reported to be among those interested  in signing Fletcher, who has also started twice for Scotland this season.

Fletcher started the first three games of the season and has not missed a training session.

But Michael Carrick was promoted to vice-captain in December as Fletcher's minutes on the pitch were limited.

He has been involved in only 12 club matches during the entire campaign, the latest coming in the FA Cup win at Yeovil on 4 January.

Since making his United debut in March 2003, Fletcher has made 342 appearances for the Red Devils and was a central part of four Premier League-title winning squads between 2007 and 2011.

He was on the bench for the 2008 Champions League final victory over Chelsea, but was suspended when United lost to Barcelona the following season after being sent off against Arsenal in the semi-final.

Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has ruled out Darren Fletcher joining Valencia.

Louis van Gaal has hinted Darren Fletcher could leave Manchester United after West Brom manager Tony Pulis confirmed an interest in the Scotland international.

Fletcher has started just five games in all competitions this season with his only Premier League start since August coming in the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa in December.

West Ham, West Brom and Spanish club Valencia have all been linked with a move for the 30-year-old but Van Gaal refused to be drawn too much on Fletcher's future.

"He is a Manchester United player and that’s the update," said Van Gaal.

"Darren Fletcher is the only Manchester United player who has won the FA Cup in my selection and he is also my captain - one of the three. That’s the update I can give.”

When pressed on a possible exit for Fletcher before the transfer window closes on February 2, Van Gaal added: “You are not sure. Because it’s the transfer month, so you never know.”

However West Brom boss Pulis confirmed his interest in bringing Fletcher to The Hawthorns, although he revealed the Baggies are not the only club keen to strike a deal.

"Darren is talking to three or four clubs and he will make his decision when it's right to make his decision," said Pulis.

"We've shown an interest, other clubs have shown an interest and he has got to sit down and make that decision so we will have to wait and see."

HAMMERS WON'T WAIT AROUND

Sam Allardyce insists West Ham cannot wait forever for Darren Fletcher to decide whether he wants to join the club.

He said: “He has got quite a few clubs interested in him so when he makes his mind up everyone will know.

“If they (the player) haven’t made their mind up, or they are negotiating somewhere else, then we couldn't wait for ever.”

The Manchester United midfielder has been linked with moves to West Brom, Valencia and Celtic, along with one to east London.

FLETCHER MOVE NEAR?

Darren Fletcher is on the verge of signing for West Ham United from Manchester United on a three-and-a-half year deal, according to The Telegraph.

Sam Allardyce confirmed on Friday that West Ham are one of a number of clubs chasing Fletcher but claimed the Hammers are yet to speak to the midfielder.

Midfielder Fletcher, 30, is on the verge of leaving Manchester United this month and is believed to have the choice of a number of clubs including the Hammers, West Brom and Valencia.

After his side scraped through to the FA Cup fifth round with victory at Bristol City on Sunday, Allardyce revealed he had spoken to Fletcher’s agent but had no inclination as to where he will go.

Allardyce said: “I don’t know whether he will come to be honest. It’s in Darren’s hands.

“I haven’t spoken to him. I’ve spoken to his agent.”

Sky sources reported last week that West Ham had moved to sign Fletcher, who has been unable to establish himself in United’s first-team since Louis van Gaal took charge ahead of the current campaign.

Allardyce confirmed his interest ahead of the FA Cup tie, which the Hammers won 1-0, stating: “We've had no permission to speak to Darren.

“He's got quite a few clubs interested in him so when he makes his mind up everyone will know.

“I don't know what the timeline is. If any of the other packages offered to him are accepted then we would accept that.

“Or if they hadn't made their mind up or were negotiating somewhere else that would be it. We can't wait forever.

“I always think at this stage of the window, if you do get something nailed on you have to take it because you might end up with nothing if you don't.”
