Manchester United offer £36m for Monaco teen Anthony Martial as they look to boost forward options- Man United make bid for 19-year-old Monaco striker Anthony Martial
- Javier Hernandez has left Manchester United and joined Bayer Leverkusen
Manchester United have opened talks with Monaco over a £36million deal for teenage striker Anthony Martial. The move comes after Javier Hernandez left United on Sunday for German club Bayer Leverkusen in a £12m deal.Monaco have yet to accept United's offer for the highly-rated Martial as they do not wish to sell but talks are expected to continue on Monday.Luis Campos, Monaco's special advisor who is repsonsible for transfers, said they have had enquiries for Martial but he was not for sale.
The 19-year-old, who has been compared in style to Thierry Henry, played for Monaco against Paris St Germain on Sunday night.
He was the subject of a failed £19million offer from Tottenham earlier this summer and has been watched by Chelsea also.United suffered their first Barclays Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday, as Swansea City came from a goal down to beat them 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium.
The performance drew a scathing assessment of the United squad from Gary Neville who said manager Louis van Gaal needs to sign a new goalkeeper, defender and striker before the transfer deadline.
Van Gaal made the dubious claim that United ‘dominated 85 minutes’ of the match, which they led through Juan Mata before Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis claimed the win for Swansea.
Sergio Romero was again selected ahead of David de Gea in goal but while his error helped Gomis score the winner, United legend and Sky Sports pundit Neville extended the blame by slamming the team’s lack of attacking intent and competency.
Neville said: ‘They have not got enough cutting edge. They have not got players who can beat players in the final third, they don’t create enough. For me they get lulled into thinking they are playing football really well.
‘They dominate possession but they don’t dominate matches. You dominate a match by scoring goals and playing at a high tempo. Win the game and then control possession.’
Neville added: ‘They need to sort the goalkeeper situation out. That’s a big problem. United need to sign a new striker, keep De Gea and now that Jonny Evans has gone, ideally a centre back too, in the next few days.’
Having allowed Robin van Persie to join Fenerbahce and sent Radamel Falcao back to Monaco at the end of his loan deal, many expected United to bring in a new forward but with just under two days of the transfer window left to go, they have yet to add a new striker.
Martial, who hit 11 goals for Leonardo Jardim's side last season, is one of the most talented young forwards in Europe, possessing the pace to get in behind defences which United are clearly missing right now.He impressed in Monaco's Champions League defeat to Valencia but would not be cup-tied should he move to United.De Gea is understood to be close to a move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish transfer window closing today.
But Van Gaal said: ‘I don’t know. You can ask all the players but you have to wait and see until Manchester United make an announcement or the club where he is going to make an announcement.
Otherwise he stays. We have coped with the situation by buying Romero.’
Swansea manager Garry Monk has now overseen three straight wins over United. He said: ‘It is excellent for the club and we have won the three games on merit.’
Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey capped the day by being called up to the England squad. Monk said: ‘He has worked very hard and deserves it.’
