Liverpool are hopeful of agreeing a contract extension of at least three years with Georginio Wijnaldum after positive talks.

The midfielder’s deal expires in June 2021 and he is keen at stay at Liverpool, whom he joined from Newcastle in 2016.

The Netherlands international, who will be 30 in November, is in line for a contract to 2024 or 2025, with wages not expected to be a stumbling block.

Wijnaldum wanted assurances he would continue to be regarded as a key player before entering into discussions to extend his career at Anfield. He has played 28 times in the Premier League this season to help Liverpool close on a first top-flight title in 30 years.

The news comes as another Liverpool midfielder, Adam Lallana, confirmed he has agreed a short-term contract extension in order to finish the season at Anfield.

The 32-year-old’s current contract was due to expire on 30 June but the England international has agreed to stay on and be part of Liverpool’s expected title celebrations.

Lallana told Liverpool’s official website: “I am really pleased to have the chance to finish this season – it means a lot to me and my family. Of course, one of the big personal positives about committing to this short-term extension is that I will now get to say goodbye to the people who mean so much to me in the right way.

“The gaffer has been different class and we’ve had an honest conversation about what my role will be in the remaining weeks. I want to contribute in the most positive way possible that helps him and the team, not just for the remaining matches of this season – but also what they’ll need to consider for next.

“I’m totally at peace with what that looks and feels like, and I know the role I’ll be playing for this team will help in what’s going to be an extraordinary period – the likes of which none of us have ever experienced.”

The manager Jürgen Klopp added: “I know how highly sought after Adam is in this moment by other clubs who want him for next season, so for him this is a commitment to us and we are very appreciative to him for it. This is absolutely how it should be, too, because I am so pleased he will be with us to finish the job this season and have the farewell he deserves so much.”

其實Wijnaldum同利記踼法好配合. work rate夠, 肯跑肯守. 單獨黎講佢唔勁, 只係一個box to box球員, 扭波, 傳波, 分波, 搶波, 無一樣突出, 但偏偏利記既三防中陣就係要佢呢種穩定唔好隨便玩失傳失波既球員. 高章波等前面三個玩, 中場負責駁腳同執漏. 間唔中神來之筆就夠.

唔易傷, 體力可以捱到90分鐘緊迫踼法, 已經係好大asset

有時覺得Wijnaldum俾我的感覺同定位好似以前既Danny Murphy,   講最出色既中場未到佢, 但又比squad player可靠, 係球迷favourite. 係以前踼442, Gerrard+Hamann在場有時好難再放Murphy, 宜家433, Henderson+Fabinho之後, Wijnaldum可以穩佔第三個中場位.

Wijnaldum rejected #LFC’s offer for a contract extension, and with the Reds having their negotiations advanced for Thiago Alcantara, Koeman had a free hand on negotiations. Barça acted fast and achieved an agreement with the player just waiting for a fee to be agreed. [@SPORT]

This goes hand and hand with what Simon Hughes said about #LFC not offering him the 4 year deal Wijnaldum wanted. It appears as if the offer was just of two years according to Spanish sources

Ronald Koeman wants to capitalise on the contract impasse between Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool by signing the midfielder for Barcelona.

Wijnaldum has entered the final year of his deal with the Premier League champions and is yet to agree an extension despite several months of negotiations. Liverpool are reluctant to sell the 29-year-old, who made more Premier League appearances for Jürgen Klopp’s team last season than any other midfielder, but their position could change should a sizeable offer arrive for a player who will be out of contract next summer.

No bid has been received from Barcelona but the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, which has close links with Koeman, claims the former Netherlands manager wants to pair Wijnaldum with his international teammate Frenkie de Jong in midfield.

Barcelona’s interest in Wijnaldum could have implications for Klopp’s attempts to sign Thiago Alcântara from Bayern Munich. Liverpool have a longstanding interest in Thiago, who is expected to leave the European champions, but are likely to have to sell a midfielder before finalising a deal for the 29-year-old. A Wijnaldum exit would clear the way for Thiago’s arrival.

Liverpool’s sporting director, Michael Edwards, struck an innovative deal with Barcelona when selling Philippe Coutinho in 2018. Under the terms of the £142m transfer, Barcelona had to pay a premium of £100m on any player they signed from Liverpool – having raided the club for Javier Mascherano, Luis Suárez then Coutinho – but that clause expired this summer.
