Andrew Bynum is missed, Phil Jackson said.
It might be easy to forget that Bynum averaged 15 points on 57 percent field-goal shooting -- plus 8.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks -- last season, given that it has been so long since the Lakers saw him at 100 percent.
But Bynum is trying to get close to 100 percent before he makes his season debut from surgery to his right knee. Bynum said Saturday he has set a goal of three weeks for his first game action this season.
"I just want to be back within three weeks," Bynum said. "That's my personal goal."
The Lakers have gotten strong play from Lamar Odom in Bynum's starting spot, but Jackson said the Lakers are overburdening Odom and Pau Gasol without Bynum around. That suggests Bynum will still have a major role for the Lakers this season.
The Lakers don't want to burn Gasol out with all the things he does for the team. Odom labored throughout the summer for USA Basketball, so the Lakers are certainly wary of playing Odom heavy minutes this season.
Bynum just turned 23 years old a month ago. He is still on the upswing in his career. Expect him to have a major impact on the Lakers this season, even if he hasn't so far.
PACERS 95, LAKERS 92: The Lakers fell behind by 15 points and couldn't fight back despite Kobe Bryant taking over with 41 points. Roy Hibbert scored 24 points, including a key dunk for the game's final points, before Bryant missed two three-pointers at the other end that would've tied the score.
