Former Real Madrid youth Ruben de la Red reflected on his first call-up to the Spanish national squad by taking stock of his club career.
The midfielder, who is one year into a four-year contract at Getafe, has a re-purchase option in his deal that could see him return to the Bernabeu either this summer or next.
He said, "I always hold out hope. If it were up to me I'd go back, but it's not my decision. Let's wait until the end of the season.
"Real Madrid must be happy to have a player go out and become an international.
"They say that moving elsewhere is desirable and it does seem to be the case. Last season I played six or seven matches; this season I've played 40 in the Liga. Clearly, I have been improving.
"Would I expect to start at Madrid? You never know if you're going to play or not. Players don't get to choose - it's always up to the coach."
Pleased With Prospects
Despite repeatedly stating a desire to return to his former side, the 22-year-old added that he was happy with his current club, and sought further international success.
He said, "What Getafe are doing this season is impressive. It'll be the second season in a row that we've reached a Copa final, and that's not easy.
"The Spain squad? This is our last meeting before Euro 2008 and it's very important to be here. Now I need to seize the opportunity and give it my all.
"And the Liga race... if Real Madrid and Barcelona remain as they are, then Villarreal could be in with a chance."
