Everton line up Darron Gibson of Manchester United

Everton are hoping to make Manchester United's Darron Gibson their first signing in the January transfer window.

Manager David Moyes has a limited transfer budget to work with despite selling Mikel Arteta to Arsenal for £10m last summer.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder would cost around £2m.

Gibson is down the pecking order at United and wants regular football to boost his chances of appearing for the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2012.

Moyes had said before Wednesday's 2 -0 defeat at Tottenham he was unlikely to see any of the Arteta transfer cash because it went to the club's bankers.

Everton had to pay £1.2m of the Arteta cash to his former club Real Sociedad while it is understood around £2m has been spent on new contracts and deals such as the one which brought Landon Donovan back to Goodison Park from LA Galaxy for a short loan spell.

The deal to re-sign Donovan was set up before the window opened and Moyes has yet to make any additions to his squad since the start of January.

Moyes is hoping to persuade Gibson to make the switch to Everton after a proposed summer move to Sunderland broke down over personal terms.

The Toffees boss had been hoping to sign a striker in January but may need to pay more attention to central defence, with England international Phil Jagielka out for six weeks with a knee injury and Sylvain Distin suffering a hamstring injury at White Hart Lane.

BLACKBURN JOHNSON OFFER TOO LOW

Blackburn have made a bid for Fulham striker Andrew Johnson - but Press Association Sport understands the Cottagers consider the offer is too low for the former England player.

The 30-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season and he has been linked with a move away from Craven Cottage during the January transfer window.

Fulham rejected an offer from near neighbours QPR for Johnson last week with Rovers now apparently looking to add Johnson to their forward line as they bid to move off the bottom of the Barclays Premier League.

Chelsea have received an offer from a rival Barclays Premier League club for defender Alex, manager Andre Villas-Boas confirmed today.

Reports have claimed the bidders are west London rivals QPR, whose new manager Mark Hughes yesterday indicated his interest in the Brazilian.

Villas-Boas said this afternoon: "From what I know from my chief executive, there has been an approach from a Premier League club.

"It is a player who we have accepted a transfer request for, so we have to listen to offers."

Chelsea are planning to replace Alex with Bolton's Gary Cahill, who they have struggled to agree personal terms with.

Villas-Boas insisted he had set no deadline for a deal to be concluded and but was hopeful that would happen before the end of the week.

"Still an ongoing negotiation, not that we don't want it resolved as soon as possible," said Villas-Boas, who refused to criticise Cahill or his representatives over the player's wage demands.

"I'm sure that all of the parties are protecting their interests."

Fulham bid for Catania star Maxi Lopez rejected

Serie A side Catania have turned away Fulham's interest in star striker Maxi Lopez after the Cottagers lodged a bid with the Italian outfit.

The Argentinean hitman has been linked with a host of clubs in January, including AC Milan.

But so far the only concrete offer Catania have received is from Fulham.

"We didn't accept Fulham's offer for Maxi Lopez because the English club wanted to get the player without spending one euro," Catania club administrator Pietro Lo Monaco told www.tuttomercatoweb.it .

"We will not loan him. Maxi has an important value."

Milan are set to renew their interest in the 27-year-old, with the Rossoneri unlikely to land Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez.

Milan confirmed last month they were keen on Lopez but their top target in the winter transfer market was Tevez.

The Italian champions pulled out of negotiations for Tevez yesterday.

Milan want to strengthen their attacking line with Antonio Cassano sidelined indefinitely after undergoing a heart procedure last year.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the club have turned down a bid from Newcastle United for Ravel Morrison.

As revealed by skysports.com on Thursday, Newcastle tabled a bid for the highly-rated youngster as they look to lure him away from Old Trafford.

Morrison, who has made two first-team appearances in the Carling Cup this season, is out of contract at the end of the season and as yet no new deal has been agreed.

Newcastle have made the first move to sign the skilful attacker with United thought to be willing to listen to offers for the 18-year-old after failing to agree a new contract.

"His agent has been working hard to get him another club," said Ferguson.

"We've offered him terms which he has refused. His demands are unrealistic as far as we're concerned.

"We've rejected an offer from Newcastle. It's all down to how that progresses."

Tottenham have rejected Queens Park Rangers' bid for midfielder Steven Pienaar.

Sky Sports revealed that QPR were in for Pienaar earlier on Friday.

Now Spurs have taken little time in rejecting QPR's initial offer for the South Africa international, with manager Harry Redknapp insisting he does not want to lose any of his squad.

"I wouldn't want to let him go. He is a good player," Redknapp said.

"I brought him on for the last 10 minutes against Everton on Wednesday and he didn't give the ball away.

"I don't have any need to weaken the squad. I would rather have a good squad for last 18 matches of the season than let one or two go who could play a part in the run-in."

QPR's new boss Mark Hughes is expected to launch another bid for Pienaar, who is believed to be unhappy with a lack of first-team action at White Hart Lane.

Wenger - We are not after Salomon Kalou



Arsene Wenger says he will not try to sign Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou during the January transfer window.

The Ivory Coast international has been linked with a move to the Emirates, but the Arsenal manager rejected suggestions he could move for the 26-year-old.

Wenger also denies that he will try to add Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison and Anderlecht striker Matias Suarez to his squad.

“Ravel Morrison at Man United? No. We know him well,” Wenger said. “No [to Kalou and Suarez as well].”
