Chelsea and Real hunt Pastore
No new Napoli approach for Argentine playmaker in ongoing saga

Last Updated: July 8, 2011 11:22am

Palermo have confirmed that Chelsea and Real Madrid are currently showing the greatest interest in Javier Pastore.

Malaga, with their new-found riches, Manchester United and Manchester City are also understood to be attempting to sign the playmaker in an ongoing transfer saga.

Napoli have shown interest in Pastore, but Palermo's president, Maurizio Zamparini, has dismissed reports that their Serie A rivals have made an new enquiry.

Zamparini instead believes that Chelsea or Real are the most likely destination for the 22-year-old Argentine.

"At the moment it looks as if Pastore will move abroad. Real Madrid and Chelsea lead the race for his services," he is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"There is not much news, as the same clubs still want him.

"Napoli have not made a fresh approach for him. Those quotes are outdated. They're from a meeting several weeks ago.

"(Napoli president Aurelio) De Laurentiis sat next to me and asked whether we could talk about Pastore. I said, 'no' and haven't heard from him since."

Liverpool ready to sell
Jovanovic, Konchesky and Cole included among probable departures

Last Updated: July 8, 2011 10:36am

After signing two of their priority targets, Liverpool will now attempt to sell the unwanted members of their squad.

"We're lucky we've got two of our priorities. That's good, and I'm sure there'll still be a lot of movement, especially going out but also, hopefully, a few more coming in."
Damien Comolli Quotes of the week

Former Blackpool captain Charlie Adam finally completed his move to Anfield on Thursday night following six months of negotiations and speculation.

The Scotland international's signing comes after Jordan Henderson was bought from Sunderland at the beginning of the summer break.

Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni looks set to become the next arrival, while Aston Villa's England winger Stewart Downing remains a target, despite a failed initial £15million bid.

Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli has also confirmed that the Reds will now aim to make some room in their squad, with the likes of Milan Jovanovic, Paul Konchesky and Joe Cole included in the probable departures.

"We are very pleased because the two signings we've done were absolute priorities on our list," said the Frenchman.

"When you go into a transfer window you always have X number of targets and it's very rare you get all of them.

Strategy

"We're lucky we've got two of our priorities. That's good, and I'm sure there'll still be a lot of movement, especially going out but also, hopefully, a few more coming in."

The fact Liverpool's two new signings, and the third they are chasing, are British is a bonus rather than a necessity, according to Comolli.

It had been suggested Kenny Dalglish was implementing a policy of signing players from the home nations - similar to the one which brought him success first time round as Reds boss - but both the manager, in the past, and now Comolli have dismissed that notion.

"There is always a strategy. It's about players who we've identified through the year," said Comolli.

"You identify players in positions where you think you're weak or, if not weak, you think you can get better or add an extra body.

"There is a strategy in terms of profile of players we want to bring in: the mentality, the attitude, the work ethic - and the age is also a factor.

"People think about the citizenship and passport - but this doesn't really matter as much as what I've just said."

Pool close on double deal
Phillips and Hill set for Seasiders

By Pete O'Rourke - Follow me: @skysportspeteo.   Last Updated: July 8, 2011 9:49am

Skysports.com understands Blackpool are closing in on the double signing of Kevin Phillips and Matt Hill.

As revealed by skysports.com on Thursday, Blackpool were in talks with Phillips about a free transfer to Bloomfield Road.

The experienced striker is available after leaving Birmingham following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

The 37-year-old is thought to have been offered a one-year deal at Blackpool and he has agreed to join Ian Holloway's men as they look to mount a bid to regain promotion at the first time of asking.

Former Wolves defender Hill is also expected to arrive on a free transfer after holding talks with the club.

Hill ended last season at Barnsley, but he left the Tykes in the summer after seeing out his contract.

Preston expressed an interest in signing Hill, but it appears their local rivals Blackpool are set to win the race for the full-back's signature.

Hill will help fill the void at left-back created by Stephen Crainey's departure following the expiry of his contract.

Baggies in Gera talks
Posted on: Fri 08 Jul 2011

IN light of recent media speculation, Albion can confirm they are in discussions with former player Zoltan Gera and his advisors about a return to The Hawthorns.

The Hungary star decided to seek a new challenge after his Fulham contract expired on June 30 and he is now a free agent.

The Baggies have opened contract talks with Gera, who became a firm fans' favourite during his previous four-year spell at the club between 2004 and 2008.

The 32-year-old has undergone a Hawthorns medical, which revealed he was carrying an ankle injury from last season.

Gera underwent surgery to rectify the problem yesterday and Albion have agreed to oversee his rehabilitation.

If, as expected, he makes a full recovery - to the satisfaction of the club's medical staff - and agrees personal terms, he will rejoin Albion.

Gera is not eligible for the first three games of the 2011/12 season after he was sent off in his final match for Fulham.

Skysports.com understands Swansea are poised to sign Benfica goalkeeper Jose Moreira.

Swansea have been searching for a new shot-stopper after seeing Dorus De Vries leave the club for Wolves last month.

The Portugal international is understood to be in Wales to hold talks about making the move to the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea have agreed an undisclosed fee with Benfica and they are hoping to conclude a deal for the 29-year-old this weekend.

Moreira found himself third choice at Benfica last season and the summer signing of Artur has pushed him further down the pecking order at Estadio da Luz.

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed earlier this summer he was in the market for two new goalkeepers and it appears Moreira will be the first to arrive.

Murphy close to QPR move
Free agent goalkeeper could provide back up to Kenny and Cerny

Last Updated: July 8, 2011 1:50pm

Skysports.com understands Queens Park Rangers are closing in on former Ipswich goalkeeper Brian Murphy.

The 28-year-old is a free agent after leaving Portman Road in May when his contract expired.

QPR, having returned to the Premier League, are interested in Murphy in order to give Neil Warnock's squad some depth.

The shot-stopper would provide back up to Paddy Kenny and Radek Cerny and would ensure Warnock has plenty of options.

Murphy signed for Ipswich from Bohemians in January 2010 and went on to make 25 appearances.

But he did not play under Paul Jewell because a broken ankle kept him out for three months from the end of December.

Clichy reveals Reds snub

Gael Clichy has revealed he snubbed offers from Liverpool and Roma to join Manchester City.

The France international completed his £7million switch from Arsenal this week after signing a four-year contract with the Eastlands club.

The 25-year-old claims he had talks with Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli about a move to Anfield, while Roma also made him an attractive offer to move to Italy.

However, Clichy claims he made the decision to join City as he wants to continue playing in the UEFA Champions League and be competing for trophies.

Serious contacts

"With Liverpool contacts have been very serious," Clichy told L'Equipe. "I had phone calls with Damien Comolli, I knew him for a while.

"Indeed, there was AS Roma too, with a nice project and an exciting proposition. But I wanted to stay in Premier League.

"I like football here and the state of mind. Moreover, City offered me the opportunity to play again Champions League. I don't know if it will be the case during the next two seasons, but next term I will play in it."

Clichy also refuted suggestions he only joined City for financial reasons.

"Money? I would have earned almost the same at Liverpool. The defenders' wages don't evolve a lot," he added.

"I can understand people believe money has been a key factor. It is not the case.

Ambitious

"Manchester City is a big club, with a big team, an ambitious club which wants to shine in any competition.

"Was I fed up to not win any trophy at Arsenal? No. I don't know if City will win anything, and maybe Arsenal will win the title next term.

"But I believe City has better weapons.

"At Arsenal, the end was frustrating. We were in all competitions until March and after we lost the League Cup final, everything collapsed.

"The Manchester City offer came late, but I didn't think a lot."

Inter join Juventus & Bayern Munich in race for Bayer Leverkusen's Arturo Vidal - report

The Chile international is continually linked with a move away from the German club and a transfer to Italy could be on the cards, with the Serie A runners-up now in the hunt

Inter have joined Juventus and Bayern Munich in the race for Bayer Leverkusen's Arturo Vidal, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

New Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini is looking to add further reinforcements to his squad after welcoming Ricky Alvarez to Giuseppe Meazza earlier this week, and are preparing for the possible departure of Wesley Sneijder, who has attracted the interest of Manchester United and Malaga.

The 24-year-old Vidal has a contract until the summer of 2012 with Leverkusen, but he's reluctant to sign a new deal, and the German club could decide to cash in on the midfielder this transfer window, with the world champions ready to make a move.

Leverkusen have already turned down a ?10 million offer from AC Milan and have informed Bayern Munich that they won't sell Vidal to another Bundesliga club.

Juventus are consequently in pole position to secure the Chilean's services as they are allegedly willing to offer up to ?21m
, but Inter appear intent on hijacking the deal for the player, who is currently competing at the Copa America in Argentina.

Emmanuel Adebayor infuriated after being left out of Manchester City's pre-season tour of USA

Togolese forward insists he only found out through the secretary of football director Brian Marwood that he would not be travelling with the team for their tour

Emmanuel Adebayor has launched an attack on the Manchester City hierarchy for not being "man enough" to formally let him know that he is surplus to requirements at the club.

The 27-year-old found opportunities hard to come by at Eastlands last season, and went out on loan to Real Madrid for the second half of the campaign.

Having completed his short spell in Spain, the Togolese forward returned to his parent club expecting to link-up with the squad for pre-season training.

However, the former Arsenal forward claims that he has been left out of the tour of the USA and insists that all he has received is an e-mail from the secretary of football director Brian Marwood.

"This is very hurtful and insulting and says a lot about Manchester City," Adebayor said in The Sun.

"On the one hand they want to become the biggest, most successful club in the world, yet the people who run the club are not acting in that way at all. No-one at City is man enough to speak to me face-to-face to explain.

"I just received an email from Brian Marwood's secretary, a lady at the club called Claire, telling me to report for training on July 9. But when I spoke to the other players, I found out the first team was leaving for the pre-season tour of the USA on July 8.

"So it's clear they don't want me here but no one even called.
Brian Marwood just got his secretary to send me an email. And I heard this was the same with at least six other players"

Adebayor has previously maintained that he would like to make a permanent move to Real Madrid.
