But the midfielder, capped eight times by England, was in Spurs' team against Fulham last weekend and Jol plans to give Murphy another opportunity at Anfield, where he spent seven years before joining Charlton.
"If Danny gets his chance at Liverpool he must grab it," said the Spurs boss. "And the game should be motivation for him to do extra well because he still loves Liverpool.
"Danny came on against Manchester United recently and it was like his debut because I don't like to chop and change the team.
"Last season we had a settled side - Jermaine Jenas was the attacking midfielder and Michael Carrick the holding player.
"We also had Aaron Lennon on the right and either Teemu Tainio or Edgar Davids on the left and that is what we did for 80 per cent of the games.
"But I know Danny is a creative player and when he came off the bench last season he gave us a lot because he is a good player who keeps the ball.
"We know what he can do and he'll get his chance."

Jol said: "Lennon has started training but needs another five weeks. He is looking okay. He had a little bit of pain but that's normal after a cartilage operation. He had a bit of cartilage removed.
"He is doing light training and trying to get power back in his leg because after an operation you lose all the strength in it."
