Everton aware Manchester City want to sign John Stones

Everton have been made aware that Manchester City are interested in signing defender John Stones this summer, Sky sources understand.

The Toffees board does not want to sell the England centre-back, and Sky Sports News HQ understands it will take a bid of at least £50m to lure him away.

Stones - who has been away with the England squad at Euro 2016 - is due to report back for pre-season training on Monday.

Everton are not saying anything regarding his future and, with no offers registered, they expect Stones to join team-mates on Monday as scheduled.

However, we understand that Stones has made it clear to boss Ronald Koeman that he wishes to leave.

Manchester City are ready to kickstart the bidding for John Stones this week with Everton expecting a £50million offer.
The 22-year-old sat out Everton's friendly at Barnsley on Saturday complaining of a knock and has made it clear that he wishes to leave Goodison Park.
Everton were prepared to offer him new terms to stay but his desire is to play for Pep Guardiola.
Everton want a new centre back of their own with Phil Jagielka also out injured after damaging a hamstring.
They have discussed Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli who is wanted by Chelsea and Bruno Martins Indi of Porto.
Napoli have opened discussions about a new contract for Koulibaly though.

John Stones: Manchester City open talks with Everton over England defender

Manchester City are in talks with Everton over the possible signing of England defender John Stones.

A deal is yet to be agreed but it is thought the two Premier League clubs are not far apart in their valuations.

It is thought City will pay about £50m to sign the 22-year-old former Barnsley player, who came close to joining Chelsea last summer.

Stones was part of the England squad at Euro 2016 but did not feature as they were knocked out in the last 16.

He made his debut for Barnsley in March 2012, 10 months before joining Everton for £3m.

City boss Pep Guardiola has identified the Yorkshireman as the kind of central defender who fits his approach to the game.

"Normally central defenders are strong in the air and aggressive," said Guardiola on Wednesday.

"But we need to have a good build-up to create easy passes in the midfield so they can create good passes for the strikers. I believe when the ball goes from the central defender to the striker as quickly as possible, it comes as quickly as possible back.

"That is why the players in that area need quality. By 31 August we will have the right squad to play how we want."

Guardiola used midfielders Javier Mascherano and Javi Martinez as central defenders while managing Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively.

And the Spaniard has identified a City midfielder who could step into the back four if required.

"Fernandinho can play in 10 positions," he said.

"He is quick, fast, intelligent, aggressive. He is strong in the air and has the quality to play good build-up, can go right or left and can pass long."

Manchester City are in talks with Everton to sign defender John Stones, Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

Sky sources understand the Toffees are asking for £50m for the England international centre-back, but City are hoping to secure Stones's services for significantly less.

Stones has flown out to Germany for Everton's two friendlies in Dresden against local side Dynamo and Real Betis.

After his side beat Borussia Dormund on penalties in their second pre-season game in China, Guardiola, who previously confirmed City want to sign Leroy Sane from Schalke, said: "It's the same answer as Sane.

"He is a player for Everton. Everybody knows we want to buy him, but I don't know what's going to happen. But I can say I'm so happy with the squad we have; the way that they train and the way they play. That's all I can say."

Stones, 22, was the subject of three bids by Chelsea during last summer's transfer window - all of them turned down.

Chelsea were prepared to pay £30m for the centre-back 12 months ago, and Stones even put in a formal transfer request in an attempt to force the move through.

Guardiola wants to implement more of a passing strategy at the club, and Stones - who is well known for his ability on the ball - could be brought in with such a tactic in mind.

"We need to create good build-up play, with easy passes in midfield, to achieve good passes for our strikers further up the pitch," said Guardiola.

"I believe when the ball goes from a central defender to a striker, the ball comes back as quickly as it goes, and we have to make it clear that we are building up in our first process, whether that is defenders or midfielders, and that is why we need players of quality, to play in that style, and we have the players to do that.

"And I think by August 31, we will have the right players to play the way we want."
