Stoke make £20m Saido Berahino offer to West Brom

Mark Hughes has confirmed Stoke City have made several bids for West Brom striker Saido Berahino.

Hughes also refused to be drawn into commenting on speculation that Stoke could be interested in signing former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie from Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Sky sources understand a bid of £20m has been made for Berahino, who has one year remaining on his current contract with the Baggies but turned down the offer of a new four-year deal last week.

"We've put some bids in and as it stands those haven't been accepted yet," Hughes told Sky Sports News HQ. "But we're still hopeful on them."

Last summer, Berahino threatened to "never play [for] Peace" again after a move to Tottenham broke down.

Berahino started as West Brom lost 2-1 to French champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in their final pre-season game of their tour of Austria and then scored two goals in a friendly against Kidderminster on Saturday.

Van Persie scored 16 times for Fenerbahce last season but has been linked to several Premier League clubs.

Hughes said: "We've seen the speculation and there are going to be a lot of those stories. Some will have a little bit of substance and some won't.

"We're looking to address key areas in the team that we feel we can improve on and if those players become available, then we're interested."

Saido Berahino: West Brom turn down £20m bids from Crystal Palace and Stoke

West Bromwich Albion have turned down £20m bids for striker Saido Berahino from Crystal Palace and Stoke City.

It is understood Palace's bid for the 22-year-old was £20m plus £3m in add-ons, while Stoke's offer was £17m up front with £3m in add-ons.

Berahino scored 20 goals in 2014-15 but struggled for form last season, scoring just four times in the league.

Palace are short of options up front after selling Dwight Gayle to Newcastle for £10m.

"Palace's bid is more straightforward than the one from Stoke earlier this week.

"West Brom's owner Jeremy Peace is determined to push the price up, reflecting the inflated market due to the new Premier League television deal.

"And they won't sell until they've lined up a replacement for Berahino."

Saido Berahino: Stoke City still interested in West Brom striker

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has said they must bide their time as they try to sign West Brom's Saido Berahino.

The Potters had a £20m bid for the 23-year-old rejected last month but remain interested in the former England Under-21 striker.

Hughes said: "It is no secret that we have made bids and have an interest inBerahino, but it is not in our hands.

"We just have to be patient and if the situation changes then we will be ready to sit down and talk."

He added: "He is obviously a player of another club and if they don't want to sell - or have no intention of selling - then there is nothing we can do to affect that.

"He is an outstanding young talent but you need a lot of boxes ticked and all the ducks in a row before any deal happens.

"At the moment that is not where we are. If it happens we will be delighted, if it doesn't we will move on to [other] targets."

Stoke start the new Premier League season with a trip to newly promotedMiddlesbrough on Saturday (15:00 BST kick-off).

Tony Pulis has again urged the West Brom board to take action over Saido Berahino's future and bring new signings into the club.

Pulis left Berahino out of Sunday's starting line-up for the goalless draw with Middlesbrough and suggested after the game that he wants the striker sold before Wednesday's transfer deadline.

Sky sources have previously reported there are bids on the table from Stoke and Crystal Palace but Albion have been stalling on a sale until they sign replacements.

Pulis, who also expects Rickie Lambert and Callum McManaman to leave before August 31, defended supporters as they booed him and his team off the pitch at the Hawthorns and said the Baggies board "know my feelings".

"Saido is going to be another topic of conversation over the next few days. You'll see [what happens] in the next 48 hours hopefully," he said.

"I don't think there are problems with the boardroom. I think they know. They know my feelings and they don't need people to boo to know my feelings.

"Supporters are supporters - I'm not going to criticise them. They pay their money, it's their football club and they have the right to do what they want.

"Hopefully it's a real busy couple of days at this club. We've got to bring some players in, as I've said. And I'm not having a go. Even the players are waiting for more to come in.

"The club were struggling at the foot of the table when I came in and 14 or 15 of those players are still here - and they've done fantastic. But we need new blood now. Hopefully that will happen over the next few days.

"And it's not just any players, but quality players. We are the top team in the West Midlands and that's what we want to stay. We need it all the way through the pitch. We need more legs and quality, and the team's an old team.

"The players we brought in, if they haven't settled, we'll get a return. I expect McManaman to leave - we'll get our money back on him. We've got our money back and made a profit on Chester. Rickie is the same. We'll most probably make some money on Rickie, if we're going to sell him."
