Arsenal are yet to break the deadlock with Celtic in their attempts to sign Kieran Tierney and may have to consider alternative options as they try to strengthen Unai Emery’s defence.

Tierney has long been seen as a top target for Arsenal and is understood to be keen on making the move to north London.

But Celtic have rejected two bids this summer, the second in the region of around £25 million, because they were unhappy with the structuring of the payment.

The Scottish side want more of the money to be paid up front while Arsenal, whose finances are stretched this summer by their failure to qualify for the Champions League, hope to pay through instalments and add-ons.

There was confidence earlier in the transfer window that a deal would be agreed, and the two clubs could yet reach a compromise, but negotiations over the 22-year-old are believed to have reached a deadlock.

Arsenal are still keen on adding a central defender to the squad this summer, having agreed a deal with Saint-Etienne for teenager William Saliba to arrive next season.

They also want a winger, with Wilfried Zaha remaining a top target despite Crystal Palace’s valuation of their talisman proving out of their reach. There is more confidence over Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, who is wanted on a season-long loan.

Arsenal are closing on an agreement with Celtic for left-back Kieran Tierney after restructuring their £25million offer.

The deal looked to have collapsed last week as Arsenal refused to increase their initial down payment and fell £5m short of Celtic's demands.

The 22-year-old Tierney has told Celtic he wants the chance to play in the Premier League and the Scottish champions are willing to grant his wish if Arsenal pay a larger proportion of the fee up front.

Unai Emery, who saw prospective £72m club record signing Nicolas Pepe arrive for his medical on Tuesday, needs defensive reinforcements with unsettled captain Laurent Koscielny unwilling to play for the club again and pushing to join Rennes on a free.

The Spaniard is now keen to get a deal sorted despite concerns over the left-back’s pelvic issues following a double hernia operation.

Arsenal are faced with injury worries across the defence, with full-back Hector Bellerin set to miss the start of the season.

Monaco are among the clubs to ask about Shkodran Mustafi with the German set to move on from the Emirates after a three-year spell and leave the squad lighter still.

Napoli were also understood to be interested in signing Tierney but Carlo Ancelotti ruled out a move, keeping faith with Faouzi Ghoulam and Mario Rui.

Meanwhile Virgil van Dijk - a former Celtic star himself - has backed Tierney to succeed in English football should the move materialise.

'It is not an easy step to make and you have to play well to do it. But he has the qualities,' said the Dutchman.

'Kieran made his debut against Dundee when I was at Celtic. I scored a free-kick up there and then he came on and helped us get the win.'

Kieran Tierney: Arsenal and Celtic reach deal for Scotland full-back

Celtic and Arsenal have agreed a Scottish transfer record fee of £25m for Scotland left-back Kieran Tierney.

The Premier League club already had two bids rejected by the Scottish champions but a deal has been struck for the 22-year-old.

Tierney will now travel south to discuss personal terms ahead of the English top-flight transfer window closing at 17:00 BST on Thursday.

He last played for Celtic on 4 May due to injury.

Speaking immediately after Celtic's 1-1 draw away to Cluj in Champions League qualifying, Parkhead manager Neil Lennon said: "I don't know anything. I've said the last few days it wouldn't surprise me [if Arsenal came back in for the player].

"If he goes, he goes with everyone's best wishes. He's an outstanding talent and a great kid."

Tierney, who has been restricted to nine appearances this year following an operation on a double hernia, has won four league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups for Celtic.

Celtic captain Scott Brown echoed the sentiments of his manager in Romania, adding: "Kieran's a fantastic player. There's always going to be interest in him. He will be a big miss if he goes."
