Barcelona have reached a verbal agreement with Arsenal, subject to contract, to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Athletic understands the striker is poised to sign a six-month deal, with the option for an additional year, that will end his time as an Arsenal player.

He will undergo a medical on Monday night ahead of the transfer deadline.

It was reported on Sunday that Barcelona were close to reaching an agreement with Arsenal to sign Aubameyang, having revealed last week that they and Juventus had made official approaches to the north London club.

Barcelona head coach Xavi is understood to have identified Aubameyang as his primary target to strengthen at the top of the pitch this month and he plans for the ex-Borussia Dortmund forward to slot into the team in the No 9 position.

Joining the five-time European champions resolves the problems that have arisen between Arsenal and Aubameyang since he was stripped of the captaincy and made to train alone after returning late from a sanctioned trip to France in December to collect his unwell mother.

While Barcelona had space for a new striker, Juventus doing business was dependent on Alvaro Morata leaving and it appears he will stay in Turin to complete a front three with Paulo Dybala and the recently-arrived Dusan Vlahovic.

That gave the La Liga giants a clear run as despite interest from Saudi Arabia, which Arsenal would have preferred. Aubameyang’s preference was to keep operating at the highest level in Europe.

The situation was handled from Arsenal’s perspective by technical director Edu and taken in conjunction with manager Mikel Arteta, the executive leadership and board.

Barcelona have already taken steps in the market to strengthen their attack, with Ferran Torres and Adama Traore brought in from Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively.

Aubameyang swapped Dortmund for Arsenal in January 2018 and put pen to paper on a three-year contract extension in September 2020, which means he is still tied down for another 18 months.

He has scored seven goals in 15 games across all competitions this campaign and 92 in 163 Arsenal appearances overall. The player was left out of the group that is in Dubai at present on a warm-weather camp during the Premier League break.

Aubameyang set for medical as he closes on Barcelona move from Arsenal

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is preparing to have a medical with a view to joining Barcelona on a free transfer after several hours of negotiations during which it appeared his proposed move from Arsenal had broken down.

If the deal gets over the line, he would be leaving with 18 months left on his contract at Arsenal, where he is out of the picture on disciplinary grounds.

Aubameyang was diagnosed with heart lesions after recovering from Covid-19 at the Africa Cup of Nations but went on to say he was “absolutely fine” and “completely healthy”.

It will suit all parties for the transfer to happen. Earlier negotiations appeared to have foundered with the clubs unable to reach an agreement on how to split Aubameyang’s £300,000-a-week wage and the Catalan club’s financial difficulties making things extremely complicated.

The 32-year-old travelled to Barcelona to be there on deadline day in the hope of completing the move – it is understood he also has family in the city.

Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, said with about four hours of the window remaining that the club’s director of football, Mateu Alemany, was optimistic of getting the deal done.

Aubameyang has been exiled at Arsenal by Mikel Arteta, who stripped him of the captaincy citing a lack of commitment. The Saudi club Al-Nassr offered Aubameyang an exit route but the player rejected that.

Barcelona tried without success to find a taker for Ousmane Dembélé, who has declined to extend his contract beyond the summer. The Frenchman had no interest in joining Arsenal and although Laporta said there was a proposal from a Premier League club for the player to consider, the 24-year-old will continue at a club who made clear they wanted him out.

Arsenal have agreed a deal with Colorado Rapids for the defender Auston Trusty, the MLS club have said. The 23-year-old will be loaned back to the American side before joining the Premier League team in July.

所以我咪話，巴塞呢幾年既操作真係亂到一個點。方針完全拿捏唔到。都唔知自己想點。又話要年輕化，又唔敢年輕化⋯⋯掟走啲仲踢得既舊人，買埋借埋一大堆唔知有咩用既球員。都唔知佢想砌一隊咩球隊出嚟⋯⋯⋯
