Newcastle United head coach John Carver has told BBC Sport that he is proud of the “character” shown by his players against Swansea City today.

"When you lose so many games your confidence is going to be hit,” the Englishman told BBC Sport. “Again we showed character, the players stayed with it right to the end.

“Ayoze Perez had a good chance at 3-1 down and Siem De Jong got the second goal and we kept going but it's not good enough."

Newcastle 35  (gd -21)  [@Leicester, West Brom, @QPR, West Ham]
Hull 34 (gd -13) [Arsenal, Burnley, @Tottenham, Man Utd]
Aston Villa  32 (gd -22) [Everton, West Ham, @Southampton, Burnley, @Arsenal]
Leicester 31 (gd -16)  [Chelsea, Newcastle, Southampton, @Sunderland, QPR]
Sunderland 30  (gd -23)  [Southampton, @Everton, Leicester, @Arsenal, @Chelsea]

Villa

NEWCASTLE UNITED
Goal

Tim Krul: Could do virtually nothing about any of the goals, and pulled off a few fine saves to keep the scoreline down. (6/10)

Defence

Daryl Janmaat: Booked and conceded a cheap free kick that ultimately led to the second goal. Touted as a future captain by John Carver but the Dutchman lacked leadership today. (5/10)

Mike Williamson: Sent off - for the second time this season by Mike Dean - after picking up two yellows; the second of which was particularly careless. He knew the penalty of mistiming the challenge and he made it anyway. (4/10)

Fabricio Coloccini: As the Magpies' most experienced player, it did not bode well to see his half-hearted challenge on Morgan before the second goal. Lazy overall from the Argentine. (4/10)

Paul Dummett: First game back following injury and understandably looked a little rusty. Anita might've been the better option at left-back. (5/10)

Midfield

Jack Colback: Lacked the composure to deal with constant pressure by James and Cambiasso, resulting in losing possession regularly. Not his finest game in a black and white shirt. (5/10)

Ryan Taylor: Dominated in midfield and was far too careless in possession, giving the ball away time and time again before he was replaced on the hour mark by De Jong. (4/10)

Jonas Gutierrez: Had one or two decent strikes at goal, with one going particularly close, but overall was never going to impact this game positively for the visitors. (5/10)

Moussa Sissoko: Allowed Ulloa to get the run on him in the corner that led to the first goal. Not the energetic, industrious player that we're used to - though it was his first game back from suspension. (4/10)

Attack

Emmanuel Riviere: Missed a first-half sitter and inexplicably conceded the penalty that put the game beyond Newcastle. Nowhere near good enough to lead the line in a relegation battle. (3/10)

Ayoze Perez: Much better and far more lively than his strike partner Riviere but lacked the service to have any real impact this afternoon. (5/10)

Mike Williamson: John Carver says defender sent off 'on purpose'

Newcastle United manager John Carver thinks his defender Mike Williamson was sent off on purpose as an "easy way out" in their 3-0 defeat by Leicester.

The centre-back was shown a second yellow for barging Jamie Vardy when the pair were off the pitch, while Daryl Janmaat was also sent off later on.

"I thought he'd done that on purpose - it looks like he did," Carver said.

"The ball was off the pitch - he had no need to make the challenge. He will miss two games. Is it an easy way out?"

Carver had not calmed down by the time of the post-match news conference.

"I thought he meant it. When the ball went on to that left-hand side my first reaction was don't do it. He did it. Vardy was off the pitch, Willo was off the pitch. There was no need to do it and I'm not accepting that.

"I told him that to his face. I don't want to go into his reaction."

Of his side's other red card, Carver said: "I got 'keeper Tim Krul to speak to Daryl Janmaat, I told him to stay calm and he didn't. The game had gone away from us. We can't keep shooting ourselves in the foot."

The Magpies have lost eight consecutive Premier League games under Carver, who is in charge until the end of the season.

Newcastle conceded a Leonardo Ulloa goal after 38 seconds and a Wes Morgan strike in the 17th minute. Ulloa sealed the game after the break from a penalty.

Carver was furious with his side and in honest post-match interview said:

"On a scale of one to 10, it is a minus 10."

"I asked if everyone understood their roles and responsibilities. I can't go and mark men on the pitch myself."

"If we're not willing to compete, get your head onto the ball and risk getting an injury, you won't get anywhere."

"We'll have an open discussion on Monday - it'll be interesting."

"There might have been players who didn't try - maybe they don't think they'll get a new contract or be here next year. But they're getting paid and should try."

'Carver is out of his depth'

Former Arsenal centre-back Martin Keown on Final Score was not impressed with the Newcastle manager.

"When you're in a position like Newcastle are in, you have to stick together, but John Carver is digging players out. There was a lack of desire granted but he is out of his depth at the moment.

"It's not just about demanding the effort. He needs guidance on how to behave because he is taking players apart. Just don't say it. If he was an experienced head, a long-term manager, he wouldn't do that."

There is no organisation, the tactics are bemusing, John Carver's team selections are odd and player discipline has gone out of the window, with Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat both sent off here.

Carver should never, ever have been considered as a manager for Newcastle. Nothing in his CV suggested that he was cut out for the job and his current handling of the team shows that. His spectacular failure alongside his verbal abuse of supporters last week and warm appreciation of Ashley before this week's game has seen any sympathy evaporate.

Carver is limited in terms of what he has to pick from but even so, he consistently makes poor choices. Ryan Taylor has struggled badly since returning from two years out yet he starts every week. What's more, he starts in the centre of midfield -- a position he wasn't good enough to play in during his prime. Williamson is another guaranteed starter regardless of his dire showings and the players always look lost and confused. Only Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez deserve any sort of credit.

There are no leaders. Coloccini a captain? It's laughable. He doesn't say a word and is no longer good enough to lead by example. The discipline has been disgusting too with petulance displayed just about every week. Coloccini was sent off in the 3-0 loss to Everton, Moussa Sissoko at Liverpool, then Williamson and Janmaat against Leicester. Rather than rolling their sleeves up and earning their huge pay packets and respect, they are stropping around like spoilt children. All four red cards were unnecessary and avoidable.
