Blackburn midfielder Brett Emerton set for Sydney move

Blackburn's veteran midfielder Brett Emerton looks set to sign for Australian A-League side Sydney FC.

BBC Sport understands that the 32-year-old could sign a three-year deal as early as Thursday afternoon.

Rovers' longest-serving player, Emerton's current deal at Ewood Park expires in summer 2012, but the final year of it would be cancelled to enable him to join his hometown club.

The Australia international joined Blackburn from Feyenoord in 2003.

He has made 247 appearances and scored 13 goals in an injury-interrupted stay at the Premier League club.

Emerton is Australia's second most-capped player on 87 appearances, three behind Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. He is scheduled to play for the Socceroos in their World Cup qualifier against Thailand in Brisbane on 2 September.

His first appearance for the Sky Blues could be in a friendly against the Newcastle Jets on 17 September.

Arsenal have had a loan bid rejected for Real Madrid midfielder Kaka.

Manager Arsene Wenger tried to act quickly to appease fans in the wake of Samir Nasri’s move to Manchester City, which followed Cesc Fabregas’s switch to Barcelona.

But his bid for the Brazilian former World Player of the Year on a season-long loan was dismissed.

Wenger must now decide whether to try and buy Kaka, with Real boss Jose Mourinho known to be keen to off-load him.

Real want to get his £153,000-a-week salary off the books. They will want at least £17.5million.

Signing Kaka, 29, would be a statement of intent by Wenger, although the Frenchman would be loath to spend so much on a player with little resale value.

Kaka is settled in Madrid but featured just 20 times for Real last season.

Paris Saint-Germain and Sao Paulo have also enquired.

Two-time A-League champions Sydney FC have announced they have officially signed Socceroos legend Brett Emerton on a three-year contract.

The 32-year-old midfielder joins the Sky Blues from English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers.

Sydney-born Emerton, who has spent the past 11 years in Europe with Blackburn and Feyenoord, is a major coup for Sydney and comes only days after Socceroos superstar Harry Kewell joined Melbourne Victory.

Emerton, who has represented his country 87 times, said he was delighted to be joining his hometown club.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me,” Emerton said in a club statement. “I’m a Sydney boy and I’m looking forward to representing the people of Sydney every week and playing in front of friends, family and Sydney football fans.

“Football has been very good to me and I have always said I’d like to come back and play in the A-League while I still have something to offer and thanks to Sydney FC and Blackburn Rovers that opportunity has come about a bit earlier than I had thought.”

Blackburn, who have been keen to trim their wage bill, helped facilitate the move by allowing the Socceroo to join Sydney without a transfer fee despite still having one year to run on his contract.

Sydney were keen on Emerton's services for some time and were understood to have tried to sign him late last season, before Blackburn managed to avoid relegation.

Sydney FC vice chairman Scott Barlow said: "The Sydney FC board has for some time viewed the signing of Brett Emerton as a major priority.

"We have been fortunate that this has come to fruition a year earlier than we had anticipated after Brett requested, and was granted, a release from the last year of his contract with English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers.

"Brett is an incredible role model for all young footballers in Australia and his return to his home town of Sydney while he is still at the peak of his powers is a major coup for Sydney FC and the Hyundai A-League.

“We are committed to delivering the highest quality football experience we can to our fans and today's announcement is an important step towards this goal."

Sydney FC chief executive officer Dirk Melton added: “This is a landmark day in the history of both football in Australia and Sydney FC.

Blackburn Rovers are reportedly looking to sign Ajax striker Mounir El Hamdaoui.

The Daily Mirror claims that Rovers boss Steve Kean flew to the Netherlands to discuss a deal this week before the club's League Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

A fee of ?5 million has been quoted for the Morocco international, who has been demoted to Ajax's reserves after falling out with manager Frank de Boer.

Blackburn are not the only club thought to be interested in El Hamdaoui, however, with Sevilla and Lille also potential suitors.

And they could also face competition from Fulham as Cottagers boss Martin Jol has signed the player twice and has said it is 'not unthinkable' for him to work with the forward for a third time.

El Hamdaoui played at Spurs under Jol but was unable to break into the first team, only gaining experience in English football with a brief loan spell at Derby County.

He has since gone on to win league titles in the Netherlands with Ajax and AZ, who he helped to the title in 2009 by finishing as the Eredivisie's top scorer.

Juventus could be ready to swap Leonardo Bonucci for Zenit St Petersburg’s Bruno Alves, according to Tuttosport.

The Turin giants have been scouring Europe all summer as they search for a centre-back to partner Giorgio Chiellini next season.

It was thought that a move for Chelsea’s Alex would solve the problem, but that deal has stalled for the moment causing the Old Lady to look elsewhere, with Zenit’s Portuguese defender now heading their list of targets.

Initial talks have already taken place and the Russian club were not prepared to accept a cash only deal for Alves; instead they are willing to accept a cash-plus-player agreement.

Bonucci, 24, is five years younger than Alves, and Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti is thought to have asked for around ?5 million plus the former Bari stopper in order to complete a deal.

Zenit paid ?23m for the former Porto defender just over a year ago.

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan should finalise his move to Inter within the next couple of days, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

The 32-year-old has been locked in talks with the world champions for the past week, and despite late interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray, a fee of ?5 million has been agreed between the two clubs, whilst personal terms have also been thrashed out.

Forlan's agent, Daniel Bolotnikoff, and brother Pablo Forlan have represented the player in negotiations with Inter general manager Marco Branca, and it is believed that he will receive a two-year contract, worth an estimated ?3m a year.

Bolotnikoff stated: "There has been contact with Inter and there is an opportunity for Diego to wear the Nerazzurri jersey. We have to review everything on Thursday or Friday [at] the latest."

The transfer has gained momentum of late after the Spanish club admitted on their official website that the Uruguay international did not travel for their Europa League clash with Vitoria Guimaraes on Thursday, due to participating in dialogue with another club.

Forlan is expected to form one of two attacking reinforcements in the absence of Samuel Eto'o, who completed his lucrative transfer to Anzhi on Wednesday, with reports in Italy suggesting any one of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Rodrigo Palacio and Carlos Tevez could follow suit.
