Bernard denies Arsenal link

Atletico Mineiro star Bernard has refused to confirm that he is to have a medical at Arsenal, insisting his future lies in his club's hands.

Reports in L'Equipe had claimed that the 20-year-old midfielder was due in London on Friday to undergo tests before finalising a switch to the Emirates.

However, speaking ahead of the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final on Wednesday, the Brazilian admitted he does not know where his future lies.

"I don't want to talk about this in a week as important as this one," he told Superesportes.

"I want to talk about the game and I don't want to be impolite or ignore it in any way.

"I don't know what will happen after the game. My future at Atletico Mineiro will be in the board's hands from Thursday onwards."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has so far only brought in France U20 striker Yaya Sanogo this summer and has been linked with a string of big names, including Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain.

Atletico Mineiro star Bernard is refusing to comment on speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal this summer.
The play-maker is believed to be a top target for the Gunners with reports in France suggesting that a £21million move to the Emirates is on the cards.
Arsene Wenger has since denied the claims, but the player himself is refusing to rule out a potential switch to north London.
‘I don’t want to talk about this now – this week is very important,’ he told Supersportes.

Bernard’s comments come ahead of a crunch game for Mineiro, with the Brazilian outfit facing Olimpia in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final.
Mineiro need to turn around a 2-0 deficient from the first game to win, but it seems that whatever happens, Bernard is likely to move on.
The club’s president confirmed earlier this month that five offers have been lodged for the 20-year-old, with Borussia Dortmund, Benfica and Porto known to be long-term admirers.

Bernard: Says Atletico Mineiro are considering offers from England, Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto

Premier League target Bernard has made it clear to the South American press that he wants to stay at Atletico Mineiro but knows he will have done his job if he does leave after winning the Copa Libertadores.
The Brazil international, 20, is reportedly being chased by a number of European clubs including Arsenal, Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto, while Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund have previously been credited with an interest.
The winger acknowledges that his future is out of his hands and says Mineiro are currently mulling over a number of offers for his services.
He is not thinking about a possible move and for the moment would prefer to savour one of the proudest moments of his career, having helped Mineiro beat Paraguayan opponents Olimpia on penalties to be crowned as South American champions.
"I don't know what can happen with me, but if I leave, I know I will have done my job," he told Sportv.
"I have said a thousand times that I want to stay, but it doesn't depend on me now.
"I made it clear that, if I stay or not, I wanted to leave here with an important title. It's up to God to decide if I stay or not, up to God, [Atletico Mineiro's] presidency and the board."
Bernard added: "I am very happy and I want to celebrate this title, which is one of the most important ones I will have in my life.
"I'll keep working until the board decides something about the transfer. There are offers from English football, Shakhtar and Porto.
"I don't have anything to say about the fans. If I could, I would stay here the rest of my life."

Exclusive: Arsenal Agree £21m Deal to Sign Bernard, Brazilian to Join In January

Arsenal have reportedly agreed terms on a £21m deal to sign highly rated Brazilian Bernard after representatives of the North London club held talks with Atletico Mineiro to sew up a deal.

CaughtOffside understands that the Gunners have met the Belo Horizonte based side’s valuation of 20 year old attacker Bernard and that as part of a deal the pint sized youngster will be loaned back to Atletico Mineiro until January, when he will then join the Arsenal squad.

Arsenal representatives were in attendance last night as Atletico Mineiro battled back from two goals down to beat Paraguayan side Club Olimpia in a penalty shoot-out to win a dramatic 2013 Copa Libertadores Final, which in turn sees Bernard’s side qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup in December. A delayed move to Arsenal hands the 20 year old a chance to play a part in those finals, taking place in Morocco before moving to the Premier League side in January.

Bernard is believed to have agreed personal terms with Arsenal earlier this month and though the deal would represent a club record transfer fee for the Emirates Stadium side it’s thought that a significant portion of the £21m outlay is dependent on appearances accumulated by the talented Brazilian international.

Bernard’s agent Adriano Spadato hinted at such a deal being close to completion via Twitter as he celebrated his client’s triumph last night, stating;

“Congratulations, Bernard. Double-winner! Confederations Cup, Libertadores… the perfect farewell”

The pint sized playmaker, who plays predominantly on the left side of the midfield, was part of Brazil’s Confederations Cup winning squad and considered one of the hottest prospects in South American football.

Wenger has targeted a number of high profile additions, seemingly moving in close to deals to sign the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Marouane Fellaini however a move for young talent Bernard is perhaps more in keeping with the Gunners boss’s transfer policy.

The likes of Nicklas Bendtner, Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho are expected to follow the likes of Andrei Arshavin, Sebastien Squillaci, Denilson and Vito Mannone to the Arsenal exit.

Bernard has made 97 appearances for Belo Horizonte based side Atletico Mineiro, scoring 21 goals in the process.
