Radamel Falcao has agreed to take a 50 per cent wage cut for the chance to prove he is not a Premier League flop. The Colombian’s season-long loan move to Chelsea was ratified on Friday, giving the striker an opportunity to become a hit in England following his failed spell at Manchester United last season.
The 29-year-old forward, who is contracted to Monaco, earned £285,000 a week at Old Trafford but will drop to about £140,000 at Stamford Bridge.‘I am very happy to be joining Chelsea and can’t wait to start training and help with our aim of retaining the league title and being successful in Europe,’ said Falcao.
Chelsea have the option to buy Falcao next summer if he rediscovers the form that made him one of Europe’s most feared strikers.
Louis van Gaal’s swoop for the striker was seen as a major coup last summer but the move to Old Trafford did not work out as hoped. Falcao scored just four times in 29 games for United and manager Van Gaal declined to seal a permanent deal.
Sportsmail understands the Falcao deal cost United £25million for the season, with his wages, £6m loan fee and various bonuses included. Falcao is now expected to link up with his new team-mates on a pre-season tour of the United States.
His first league return to Old Trafford is scheduled for December 28.
Mourinho has made it a summer priority to sign a new striker to back up first-choice Diego Costa following the departure of Didier Drogba at the end of the season.
