England Ratings (The Independent)David James: Couldn't offer much resolve to England's dire defence. His positioning was questionable on Podolski's goal and Mueller's first went straight through him as he failed to stand up. He did look assured when coming for crosses and made a solid block from Klose. 5
Glen Johnson: His defensive weaknesses were exposed time and time again and he was out of position when Germany doubled their lead. He was one of the guilty party as Germany exploited England on the counter twice, and never offered an attacking contribution. 3
Matthew Upson: Was shrugged off by Klose far too easily on the first goal but leapt like a salmon to reduce the deficit. His decision making was poor and he looked completely out of his depth as Germany piled forward and opened England up. 5
John Terry: Completely misjudged the flight of the ball to allow Klose to score, and struggled to compose an all too often exposed backline. His positioning was all over the place and he was sloppy in possession. 4
Ashley Cole: Unable to offer his usual attacking bursts as he was pegged back, and wasn't convincing in the tackle or in possession. Unusually shakey game from the normally reliable left-back. 5
James Milner: Delivered a lethal cross which Lampard nearly converted but wasn't able to get enough balls into the box as he was isolated as the lone wide player. Lost the battle with Boateng as the game progressed, and he was substituted early. 5
Gareth Barry: Was supposed to be protecting the back four but despite his tireless running, Germany cut straight through the midfield to carve out chance after chance. He spent most of the game chasing shadows, and rarely overturned or retained possession. 4
Frank Lampard: Denied a certain goal after his shot dropped way over the line and crashed a free-kick against the crossbar as England desperately searched for a reprisal. As usual for England, he went missing for long periods and never came close to replicating the dangerous runs he makes for Chelsea. 6
Steven Gerrard: Floated over the perfect cross for Upson to head home, but never delivered often enough. Had much more of an impact on play when he drifted inside, but nothing went right for the captain as most of his shots and searching passes were misdirected. 4
Jermain Defoe: Powerful when surging forward and when holding the ball up despite his small frame. Linked-up well with Rooney at times. Wasn't given much room by a well-regimented German defence and never received the kind of service which he thrives on. 5
Wayne Rooney: Frustratingly kept quiet by some close marking and tight pressing. Struggled to find space as he toiled and tussled with Friedrich, who severley reduced his input. A shadow of the player we see for Manchester United. 4
Joe Cole, for James Milner, 63 minutes: Tried to inject some tempo into England's play but he was closed down quickly which only Germany to counter-attacker more effectively.
Emile Heskey, for Jermain Defoe, 71 minutes: Lumbering.
Shaun Wright-Phillips, for Glen Johnson, 87 minutes: Never had time to get into the game, only touched the ball a few times
Fabio Capello: Tactically outsmarted as Germany exposed all of England's defensive frailties. The introduction of Joe Cole was too little to late, and bringing the hapless Heskey on when England needed goals was baffling. England never looked settled and were never cohesive, and his future must be in doubt as he failed to galvanise the team. 2
