Manuel Fernandez Fernandez 'Pahiño' died in Madrid today aged 89. He arrived at Real Madrid in 1948 from Celta Vigo and stayed at the club until 1953, scoring 124 goals in 144 games. Real Madrid CF wishes to express its deepest condolences to his family.
Pahiño was born in San Paio de Navia (Pontevedra) on 21 January 1923. He began his career at Arenas Alcabre and then joined Celta Vigo's youth teams. He signed for Real Madrid in 1948 and was the top scorer of La Liga in the 1951/52 campaign with 28 goals.
Pahiño was one of the greatest strikers of his time and has one of the best goal-scoring averages in Real Madrid history: 0.86 strikes per match. He was an excellent player inside the box, with a powerful shot and an excellent jump to score headers. Collectively, he won the Pequeña Copa del Mundo with the team in 1952, in which he scored three goals. He also played for Arenas Alcabre, Celta, Deportivo de la Coruña and Granada.
