BELLAMY BACK BUT GERRARD STAYS AT HOME (Jimmy Rice 07 November 2006)

Rafa Benitez will leave several senior players on Merseyside for the trip to St Andrews on Wednesday, though Craig Bellamy could feature after recovering from a calf injury. Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Pepe Reina and Luis Garcia are among those who will not play in the Carling Cup tie against Birmingham.

The Liverpool manager revealed Jerzy Dudek will make his first start of the campaign, while Daniel Agger, Dirk Kuyt, Xabi Alonso, Momo Sissoko, Mark Gonzalez, Jamie Carragher and Jermaine Pennant will also appear at some stage.

"We cannot use the same players for the whole season," said Benitez.

"For this game we will have a lot of senior players, some young lads also but I think it will be a strong squad."

Bellamy could return after missing the last five games, while Robbie Fowler is also in contention.

A stoppage time goal from Daniel Agger has given Liverpool a 1-0 half time lead over Birmingham City at St Andrews, but there's been bad news for the Reds with Momo Sissoko being stretchered off injured after 27 minutes.
Sissoko fell heavily on his arm in a tackle with City's Mehdi Nafti and it was immediately clear he would be unable to continue when he didn't move for some time after. And there was a seven minute delay before Momo could be carried from the field to be replaced by Alonso.

The Reds picked themselves up though and took the lead through Daniel Agger deep into injury time. It came when the home side failed to clear a corner and Agger was there to smash the ball high into the net after Gonzalez had put the ball back into the danger area.

But that goal has been somewhat overshadowed by the injury to Sissoko and it's hoped the news on him will not be as bad as initially anticipated.

Rafael Benitez has admitted he expects to be without Momo Sissoko for a lengthy period of time after the Liverpool midfielder dislocated his shoulder at Birmingham.
The Mali international landed awkwardly on his right hand side after a challenge from Mehdi Nafti during the Reds' Carling Cup victory at St Andrews.

"We are keeping our fingers crossed but I think it's serious," said Benitez after the game. "I can't say anymore at this moment because we are waiting for news.

"We need all of our players and we know that Momo gives us wonderful energy in the middle of the field, but it's clear we could be without him for a long while, at least one month."

As far as the match was concerned, Benitez was happy to see his side record their first away victory of the season to secure their place in the last eight of the Carling Cup.

"The players all worked extremely hard but it would have been easier for us if we'd taken our chances," he added.

"We missed a penalty and had other clear opportunities and if we'd scored another goal it would have been a different game and easier for us."

Liverpool will find out their quarter final opponents when the draw takes place on Saturday afternoon.
