McClaren returns to United
Steve McClaren made United’s Carrington training ground his first port of call as England boss.
McClaren has been part of the England set-up since October 2000 as assistant coach to Sven-Goran Eriksson, and was part of the coaching team at the World Cups in 2002, Korea/Japan, and 2006, Germany, as well as Euro 2004 in Portugal.
He replaced Eriksson as England manager on Tuesday, and promptly returned to the training ground he left to become Middlesbrough manager in June 2001. McClaren spent two years as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Old Trafford after replacing Brian Kidd, forming part of the management team that won the Treble in 1999, and the Reds’ supremo was more than happy to welcome back his former number two.
The new English manager used the opportunity to share a joke and reminisce about old times with Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton, while he also managed to grab a few minutes with a number of his England squad players including Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and United's new signing Michael Carrick.
It is uncertain what McClaren made of Rio Ferdinand’s new haircut, the defender was sporting a return to the skinhead look of the 2003/04 season. Rio had previously gone for the braided look, not to mention an afro over the summer before he did away with his locks ahead of the new season.
McClaren is set to travel to Amsterdam to watch United in action against FC Porto and Ajax.
