Real's stylish return leaves Lyon reeling

Olympique Lyonnais 0-2 Real Sociedad de Fútbol

The Spanish side took a firm grip on their play-off tie through spectacular goals by Antoine Griezmann and Haris Seferovic.
At the scene of their last exit from the UEFA Champions League tenseasons ago, Real Sociedad de Fútbol marked their return to thecompetition with a stylish victory over Olympique Lyonnais.

Antoine Griezmann's sensational volley against his boyhood clubannounced their return to European football's top table before anequally sublime goal from Haris Seferovic doubled the difficulty of thesecond-leg task facing Rémi Garde's team, who had defender Milan Biševacdismissed for a second bookable offence.
The positive energygenerated by both sets of supporters was the fitting soundtrack to afrenetic opening at the Stade de Gerland. Carlos Vela threatened tointerrupt the melodies from the home supporters in the Virage Nord, but,right in front of them, struck the side-netting with the first clearchance of the match. He then thudded another effort against a post after12 minutes, following good vision in the build-up from Seferovic.

Tradingthe role of finisher for supplier, Vela helped set up Real'sspectacular opening goal in the 17th minute, his cross from the leftacrobatically volleyed low into the corner by Griezmann, the onlyattacking player occupying the Lyon box. Frenchman Griezmann – inspiredby his transition from Gerland stands to pitch - had a hold on the gameand shrugged aside Gueïda Fofana to force a save from Anthony Lopes froman acute angle midway through the half.

Lyon set about imprintingtheir mark on the match at the start of the second half, but no soonerhad Maxime Gonalons glanced a header wide, than Jagoba Arrasate's sidestruck again. Seferovic was the man responsible, collecting an awkwardlybouncing ball on the left and executing a stunning half-volley from 25metres that dipped under the crossbar and left a heavy dent in thehosts' resolve.

Gonalons hit the crossbar with a header frompoint-blank range and Claudio Bravo scampered off his line to smother aforward run from Miguel Lopes, but when Biševac brought down Vela forhis second yellow card, Lyon's night got even worse. The Ligue 1 sideare left with an uphill battle for the second leg next Wednesday, onethat would have increased in scale had substitute Rubén Pardo hit thetarget with his late effort.
