BASTOS: A CLOSER LOOK 01/20/2014
He can play anywhere down the flanks and is equally good in defense and going forward.
Although used predominantly down the left, he can fill in on the opposite side if need be.
He possesses a fearsome shot and has the ability to produce curling free-kicks with swerve and dip that make opposition goalkeepers' lives hell.
Michel Bastos, 30, has all this in his locker.
The Brazilian is Roma's newest signing and moves to Italy for the first time in his career. A career that has seen him flourish in France: first with Lille (2006-2009), where in his final season he was coached by Rudi Garcia,
then at Lyon alongside a certain Miralem Pjanic (2009-2013).
Bastos started out with hometown team Pelotas. After a spell in the youth set-ups at Rotterdam clubs Feyenoord and Excelsior, he moved back to Brazil,
featuring for Atletico Paranaense, Gremio and Figueirense.
But he wouldn't be out of Europe for long, and this time he would leave his mark: he joined Lille and began to make a name for himself, finding the net on a regular basis.
In 2008/09 he scored 16 goals as LOSC qualified for the Europa League.
But he would play at Europe's top table the following season: Michel caught the eye of Lyon, who handed him a four-year deal.
Bastos' performances for president Aulas' club confirmed his status as one of Ligue 1's top players
and he also put in a number of eye-catching displays in the Champions League.
The Brazilian earned a transfer to Schalke 04 in January 2013, where he scored four times in 14 appearances.
Last summer he opted for a move to the Middle East with the UAE's most successful side, Al-Ain.
But life in Asia soon lost its appeal and Michel joined Roma in January to once again team up with his mentor Rudi Garcia.
