Barcelona to sign Rakitic for ?20m
The Catalan club have stolen a march on rivals Real Madrid and Atletico to snap up the Croatia midfielder on a five-year deal from Sevilla ahead of the World Cup



Barcelona have tied up a ?20 million deal to sign Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla.

The 26-year-old was one of the standout performers in La Liga last season as Sevilla finished in fifth place

and he helped the Andalusians claim the Europa League crown with victory over Benfica in May.

The former Schalke star's performances caught they eye of many of Europe's elite clubs

and his father admitted earlier this week that he had offers from Barca, Real Madrid and Atletico, adding: "We'll decide after the World Cup."

However, Barca have now stolen a march on their two domestic rivals by agreeing a deal ahead of the summer showpiece in Brazil, which starts next week.

New coach Luis Enrique met with sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta for more than two hours on Thursday to discuss transfer plans for the summer and with

former Arsenal pair Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song both looking likely to return to the Premier League, Barca have acted fast to push through a deal for Rakitic.


Sevilla coach Unai Emery was resigned to losing the Swiss-born midfielder on Thursday. "I could understand if Rakitic leaves," he told Canal Plus.

"In an ideal world, he would stay but I know he has several offers. If he leaves, we'll try and sign another Rakitic."

Rakitic, who is preparing for Croatia's World Cup debut against Brazil, will sign a five-year deal with the Catalan club and his release clause is to be set at ?70m.

He is the second Croatian to sign for Barca this summer after the Blaugrana also brought in 17-year-old attacking midfielder Alen Halilovic from Dinamo Zagreb.

The Catalan club have sent representatives to the Andalusian club to finalise a summer move for the Croatia international

Barcelona delegates are in Seville with the aim of clinching the signing of midfielder Ivan Rakitic as a ?20 million move edges closer to fruition.

Insiders at the Catalan club now believe a deal for the Sevilla star is imminent after a meeting about the transfer took place in Seville on Monday -

which included the Catalan club's financial vice-president Xavier Faus.

Dejan Rakitic, brother and agent of Ivan, has been a major force behind the move, pushing for it despite Sevilla president Pepe Castro's reluctance to sell the Croatia international.

Ivan Rakitic appeared to say goodbye to the Sevilla fans after their victory in the final of last season's Europa League,

despite having verbally agreed to extend his contract with the club -  a deal which will no longer happen.

The Andalusian side have not yet given up on getting more than ?20m for the 26-year-old in the move,

which could see Barcelona B midfielder Denis Suarez moving in the other direction on loan with an option to buy.

Ivan Rakitic has admitted that joining Barcelona is a dream come true after the Catalan club reached an agreement with Sevilla to sign their captain.

The Croatia midfielder will complete the formalities of the move when he returns from the World Cup and he could not hide his delight at the pending transfer.

The 26-year-old midfielder expressed his excitement at the switch as he continued his World Cup preparations with Croatia at their training base in Praia de Bahia.

"I am very happy. It is a dream come true," he told Catalan paper Sport.

Barca agreed to meet Sevilla's ?20million (£16.1m) asking price to make the Rakitic the first signing since Luis Enrique replaced Tata Martino as head coach at the Nou Camp.

It is widely reported in Spain that Rakitic's impending move will result in Cesc Fabregas sealing a return to the Premier League, with Chelsea favourites to land his signature.
