Manchester City hold talks with Juventus star Paul Pogba



Manchester City have held talks with highly-rated Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, understands Sky Sports Italia.

City’s representatives travelled to Turin to speak to the France international over a potential transfer to the Etihad Stadium.

However, dethroned Premier League champions City face stiff competition as the 22-year-old has also been linked with Paris St Germain, Barcelona, Real Madrid and former club Manchester United.

United signed Pogba from Le Havre in 2009 in a move which enraged the French club but he made only three league appearances from the bench before rejecting a new contract and joining Juventus on a free transfer in July 2012.

The Italian champions are keen to keep Pogba, who is under contract until June 2019, and have slapped a price-tag of a minimum of 100m euros on their prized possession.

City are believed to be the first club to visit northern Italy in their bid to sign Pogba and any deal is likely to involve other players as makeweights.

PSG are reportedly willing to meet Juve’s valuation of the player but the figure is understood to have seen Real Madrid cool their interest.

Barca are currently restrained by a transfer ban imposed by FIFA for 2015, while Juventus team-mate Andrea Pirlo has dismissed the chances of Pogba returning to Old Trafford.

“He seems very happy at Juventus," said Pirlo. "I know he is focused on finishing the season with a lot of success. Whatever the future is for him I don't see it being Manchester United.

“He didn't feel he was treated well there. I know that was under Sir Alex Ferguson and now there is a new coach, but I do not seeing him returning to a club where he was not treated well.”

Pogba, meanwhile, is focused on facing Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Bernabau on Wednesday night.

The in-demand midfielder returned from 52 days on the sidelines with a torn thigh muscle at the weekend and marked his comeback with a goal against Cagliari.                  

"Ready for Madrid? I'm always ready," said Pogba. "We know it's going to be really difficult. They're playing at home as well so it's going to be even harder for us but we want to win and we'll do everything we can to win this match."

Real Madrid say Paul Pogba bid claims are 'completely false'

Real Madrid have issued a statement to deny reports they have made a bid for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.

Italian newspaper La Stampa reported this week that Real had offered the 22-year-old a five-year deal worth ?10 million per season.

However, the Spanish club have taken the unusual step of making an official announcement to say the report is "completely false".

The statement read: "Following the reports published in the Italian newspaper La Stampa concerning an alleged offer from Real Madrid for the player Paul Pogba, the club wishes to state the following: Real Madrid have had no contact either with Juventus or the player's agent and, as a consequence, the reports published in this newspaper are completely false."

After a fantastic season with Juventus, Pogba has been linked with a move to a number of top clubs in Europe this summer.

It has been reported that La Liga would be his preferred choice but he has a contract with Champions League finalists Juve until 2019 and it remains to be seen whether he leaves Turin.

Manchester City plot move for Juventus star Paul Pogba

Manchester City are preparing to turn their interest in Paul Pogba into a firm bid, according to Sky sources.

However, Pogba does not qualify as a homegrown player having failed to reach the required quota of appearances while at Manchester United.

Pogba spent two seasons at Old Trafford from July 2010 to 2012 where he struggled to make an impact, being given just a handful of substitute appearances for the first team before leaving for Italy.

City need homegrown talent to fill their Champions League quota - defined as anyone who has trained at an English club for three years between the age of 15 and 21.

Manuel Pellegrini's team had five in their squad last season, which was reduced to 21 players overall due to breaching Fair Play rules.

Defender Dedryk Boyata has left to join Celtic, midfielders James Milner for Liverpool and Frank Lampard for New York City leaving just goalkeeper Joe Hart and left-back Gael Clichy from last season's European selection.

Veteran back-up keeper Richard Wright also qualifies as homegrown while the club can only name 17 overseas players, leaving them currently with a Champions League squad of just 20 senior players.

Sky Italia's Ghilda Pensante, who says Juventus will only consider "extraordinary" offers for the France international, told Sky Sports News HQ that the club would accept nothing less than 80m euro (£58m).

Pogba has already been the subject of intense transfer speculation this summer, with reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Chelsea and City, whose chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has talked about making "quality signings" during the transfer window.

The 22-year-old is currently back home preparing for international friendlies against Albania and Denmark.

Real Madrid declare interest in Juventus' Paul Pogba

Real Madrid have declared their interest in the widely sought-after Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.

Sky Sports reported last month that Manchester City were preparing a formal bid for the 22-year-old Frenchman - and they are just one of several top European clubs including Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona who are keen to sign him.

Juventus have said they will only consider extraordinary offers for Pogba after his agent, Mino Raiola, predicted a bidding war for his player that could fetch a fee as high as ?80million - no formal offers have yet been made.

And Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane told French broadcaster RTL on Monday: "Many clubs are interested in him and among these is Real Madrid.

"I think Pogba is a fantastic player. What I like most is that it can do everything. He is a complete player, who can also score, who is not afraid to go forwards. In terms of quality, he is extraordinary."
