Roma are close to agreeing a deal for Tottenham defender Federico Fazio, according to Sky sources.

The Italian club want the former Sevilla centre-half on loan with a view to a permanent deal worth around £3.5m.

Fazio, who led Sevilla to Europa League glory before moving to White Hart Lane in August 2014, did not make a single Premier League appearance for Spurs last season and saw a move to West Brom collapse last August.

Spurs currently have Belgium internationals Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen as their first-choice centre-back pairing, with Kevin Wimmer as back-up, and manager Mauricio Pochettino said last week he didn't expect to sign another centre-half because of the quality young options at his disposal from the academy such as Cameron Carter-Vickers and Anton Walkes.

Fazio, 29, moved back to Sevilla on loan in January, but made only four league appearances in Spain and will now hope to win regular first-team football in the Italian capital.

Roma have completed the signing of Tottenham defender Federico Fazio on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

Fazio joined Tottenham in 2014 but spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla, helping the Spanish club win the Europa League trophy.

Roma said on their website they had paid 1.2m euros (£1m) for the loan, while the option to buy comes with a price tag of 3.2m euros (£2.67m) and is conditional on certain sporting targets being reached.

"I am very happy to join a great team like Roma," the 29-year-old Fazio said. "I really want to start training and get to know my new team-mates and coach."

Fazio, capped three times by Argentina, made 192 appearances for Sevilla prior to joining Tottenham, but never truly settled at White Hart Lane as he made 32 appearances for Spurs.
