Suwon: Jose Mota's double saw Suwon Bluewings reach the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League with a 2-0 win over Beijing Guoan at Suwon World Cup Stadium on Tuesday.
Mota's header opened the scoring after 27 minutes and the Brazilian wrapped up a deserved win for the Koreans six minutes from the end.
Suwon fired an early warning when Mota volleyed a cross narrowly over the bar at the far post with just six minutes gone.
The game settled down into a cagey affair between the sides, understandable given the magnitude of the encounter, and Yeom Ki-hun fired harmlessly over from 25 yards in the 25th minute after Mota had slipped the ball into the midfielder's path.
However, Suwon took the lead two minutes later when Mota powered home a free header from a corner six yards out, leaving keeper Yang Zhi rooted to his line.
The Beijing keeper came to his side's rescue on the half-hour mark, though, when Mota beautifully brought down a cross at the far post and evaded a challenge but Yang stood up well to beat away his effort.
Yeom had a great chance to double Suwon's advantage two minutes later when Mota played him in down the left side and he drove into the box but drilled his shot beyond the far post.
Beijing wasted a great chance to equalise in the 58th minute when substitute Xu Liang sent a free header from a corner disappointingly over the bar from an almost identical position to Mota's goal.
Du Wenhui then spurned Beijing's best opportunity of the game on the hour mark when his perseverance in the box presented the midfielder with a sight of goal six yards out but he lacked composure and smacked a left-foot shot woefully wide.
Suwon came close to a second goal in the 69th minute when Cho Won-hee picked out Lee Sang-ho's run in the box with a dinked ball forward but the striker lashed impetuously wide.
But the hosts secured their place in the last eight with six minutes to go as some neat approach work found Yeom in space on the left just outside the box and his inch-perfect low cross was slid in at the back post by Mota.
Beijing almost pulled a goal back with the last kick of the game when the ball broke to Wang Ke inside the box but his powerful shot was deflected onto the underside of the bar by a Suwon defender on the line and bounced out, summing up the Chinese sides’ disappointing night.
