Bernd Schuster named new Malaga CF coachMalaga Club de Futbol and Bernd Schuster (Ludwigshafen, Germany, 22/12/59) have reached an agreement for him to be the new coach for the Martiricos Club. Malaga CF trust that the German-born coach will help to develop and achieve the team’s long term goals, as a five-year contract has been signed. Schuster has a great deal of experience, having coached Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Besiktas, Getafe and Levante, amongst others. He will be officially presented as the new Blue and Whites’ coach next week.

Bernd Schuster arrives at Malaga accompanied with his coaching team, consisting of former Spanish League player, Fabio Celestini, who will act as assistant coach, and physical trainer, Carlos Cascallana.
His career as coach
When his time as a player came to an end, Bernd Schuster began his coaching career in his home country. He coached German teams Fortuna Koln and FC Cologne, in the Bundesliga Second Division, in 97/98 and 98/99 respectively. Following a stretch with FC Barcelona as grass roots coordinator, he moved to Xerez CF during two seasons (01/02 and 02/03), and saw the Second Division side to promotion during his first year as coach. In 2003/04 he coached two teams, beginning with Ukraine-based FC Shakhtar Donetsk, before moving to Levante UD. He remained with Levante until the end of 2004/05.
The following two seasons, Schuster was in charge of First Division side, Getafe CF. The team made history during this time, qualifying for the UEFA Cup, and reaching the Copa del Rey for the first time in 2007. They were knocked out by FC Barcelona in an epic semi-final (5-2 in the first leg, 4-0 in the return leg).
After his great success with Getafe CF, Bernd Schuster moved to Real Madrid, where he used to be part of the team back in the late 80’s. During his first year as coach, in 07/08, Real Madrid won the League title as well as Spain’s ‘Supercopa’, however in 08/09, Schuster left Madrid before the end of the season. In 2010/11 he returned to work as coach of Turkish side, Besiktas JK.
His career as a player
As a footballer, Bernd Schuster had an impressive career. He began playing for German-based FC Augsburg and FC Koln. He then moved to Spain in 1980/81 to join the ranks of FC Barcelona, where the team won one League title, three Copa del Rey titles, one ‘Supercopa de Espana’ and two League Cups. Schuster then signed with Real Madrid, and during his brief time there the team won the League both seasons, as well as one Copa del Rey and one ‘Supercopa de Espana’. Schuster’s last Spanish Club was Atletico de Madrid, where he stayed for three seasons, achieving two Copa del Rey titles. He then moved to Bayer Leverkusen for two years, and ended his career in San Jose Clask in the United States, and Pumas de la UNAM in Mexico.
