Dwight Howard, Rockets to meet


Shortly after NBA free agency commences in the wee hours Sunday morning, Dwight Howard is set to meet in Los Angeles with a Houston Rockets contingent that includes management, players and former star center Hakeem Olajuwon, according to a source with knowledge of the meeting.


Teams are officially allowed to start meeting with free agents at 12:01 a.m. Monday.



The Rockets plan to send general manager Daryl Morey, coach Kevin McHale, owner Les Alexander, Olajuwon and Rockets James Harden and Chandler Parsons to recruit Howard, the source said.


ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported earlier this week thatHoward, a seven-time All-Star who spent this past season with theLakers, also plans to meet with Dallas and Atlanta before sitting downwith the Lakers. A source told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Dave McMenamin thatHoward also has agreed to meet with Golden State. Broussard reportedit's unlikely Howard will re-sign with Los Angeles.



Sources told ESPN that the Mavericks' delegation -- led by owner Mark Cuban and star forward Dirk Nowitzki-- will present Dallas' case to Howard on Tuesday in Los Angeles.Broussard reported earlier in the week that the Lakers will go last, arequest made by the team, meaning Atlanta's turn likely will be betweenHouston's and Dallas' presentations.



"There is no frontrunner," a source told McMenamin.

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLA, Steve Nash is expected to beapart of the pitch to get Dwight Howard to re-sign with the Los AngelesLakers.
As of right now, Kobe Bryant and Mitch Kupchak are the only other known people to be part of the meeting on Tuesday.

Rockets trade Thomas Robinson to Blazers, clearing room for Dwight Howard


Hours before meeting with Dwight Howard, the Houston Rockets reached an agreement to trade Thomas Robinson to the Portland Trail Blazers and clear the necessary space to offer the star free-agent center a max contract, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Rockets can now present Howard with a four-year, $88 million contract in a late-night Sunday meeting in Los Angeles.


The Rockets are the frontrunners to sign Howard, and unloadingRobinson's contract is the final hurdle to create the space necessary tomake the move.


Portland will send the Rockets the draft rights to Kostas Papanikolau and Marko Todorovic and two future second-round picks, league sources said.


The deal can't become official until the NBA's moratorium on free-agency signings ends on July 10.

All signs point to Chris Paul re-signing with Clippers


All early indications Sunday were that Chris Paul was going to re-sign with the Clippers.


The Clippers’ plan is to offer Paul a maximum five-yeardeal worth $107.3 million when the free-agency period opens at 9:01 p.m.Sunday night.

Sources: Confident Rockets make Asik, Lin available in trades


Emboldened by their pursuit of free agent Dwight Howard, the Rockets have called several teams and made Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin available in potential trades, league sources told CBSSports.com.

Houstonhas secured the first meeting with Howard shortly after the NBA'sfree-agent negotiating period begins at 12:01 a.m. ET Monday. Acontingent led by GM Daryl Morey and former Rocket Hakeem Olajuwon isscheduled to meet with Howard in Los Angeles. The Mavericks, Hawks andWarriors also have meetings scheduled with Howard, and the Lakers willget to make the final pitch on Tuesday, sources said.

The Rocketsare oozing with confidence that they will lure Howard from the Lakers,and are making contingency plans to construct the team around him.

Pistons meeting with Josh Smith, planning to make lucrative offer


Detroit Pistons general manager Joe Dumars met with Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith at 12:01 a.m. ET with a plan to make the free agent forward a substantial four-year offer, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.


Atlanta has shown far more interest in workingsign-and-trade arrangements for Smith than re-signing him to a long-termdeal, league sources said.


Along with re-signing point guard Jose Calderon, Smith is the Pistons' top priority on the market, league sources told Y! Sports.


The Pistonsplanned to make a preemptive strike on Smith, understanding that he's asecondary priority for several teams awaiting the resolution of the Dwight Howard derby, sources said.


Smith, 27, is one of thefree-agent stars on the market, a versatile 6-foot-9 forward that Dumarswould add to a frontline that includes Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond. Smith averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Hawks this past season.


Dumars also will meet with forward Andre Iguodalaon Monday in Los Angeles, but it's doubtful the Pistons have thewillingness to outbid Denver to sign him. Denver GM Tim Connelly andcoach Brian Shaw plan to meet with Iguodala in Los Angeles on Monday andpresent him with a contract extension, league sources told Y! Sports.
