Belgium midfielder Eden Hazard has signed a new five-and-a-half year deal with Premier League leaders Chelsea.

The 24-year-old, signed for a reported £32m from Lille in 2012, has scored 13 times in 36 appearances this season.

"Since I came here in 2012, I have always felt good and the club has been very supportive to me," Hazard said.

"He is already a top player and his evolution has been fantastic," manager Jose Mourinho said. "He is still very young and he can become the best."

Hazard, who helped Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals last year, has made a total 147 appearances for the Blues, scoring 43 goals.

"The manager has helped me improve a lot, the fans have been fantastic and I have an amazing understanding with my team-mates," he added.

"I always try to give pleasure to the supporters with my style of play and it is nice to know they appreciate my work."

Widely regarded as one of the most dangerous attackers in world football, Hazard, 24, has completed more dribbles and suffered more fouls than any other player in the league this season, drawing praise for his sporting manner as well as his technical ability.

The Belgian arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2012 and has since made a total 147 appearances for the Blues, scoring 43 goals.

Hazard was voted Chelsea’s Player of the Year by the club’s supporters for the 2013/14 campaign following an exhilarating second season in west London. He finished as our top goalscorer, netting 17 in all competitions, before representing his country at their first World Cup since 2002. He also lifted the Europa League in his first season as a Chelsea player.

Eden Hazard is set to sign a new contract with Chelsea and could go on to become one of the club's greatest players, says manager Jose Mourinho.

Hazard will reportedly sign a five-year contract worth around £200,000-a-week.

"He will [sign]," said Mourinho. "My club always told me that the situation would finish with a new contract, so I was never worried about that."

Mourinho also said the Belgian, 23, has the potential to become a club legend, but warned: "He needs to win titles."

Hazard, who joined the Blues from Lille in 2012, won the Europa League with Chelsea in 2013 and was voted PFA Young Player of the Year last term.

Mourinho said: "I don't know players who are considered legends in clubs without winning titles, so he has to do that but the potential, I think, everybody knows."

Hazard is currently operating without an agent but Mourinho was never concerned that the winger would not extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.

"I was never worried about it, since the moment I met his father," Mourinho said. "Everything was very clear about their intentions and their happiness to stay with Chelsea."

Hazard has scored four goals in his last seven matches for the Premier League leaders.

Eden Hazard is poised to give Chelsea the best possible Christmas present by agreeing the final details of his new contract.

A new £200,000-a-week five-year contract has been on the table for three months and talks have been stepped up this week over signing off the small print.

Hazard and Chelsea are now keen to finalise the 23-year-old’s contract as quickly as possible, so that a public announcement can be made.

The deal will make Hazard the highest-paid player at Stamford Bridge and will kill any speculation over the Belgian’s future ahead of the Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain in February.

Chelsea were frustrated by repeated stories in France linking Hazard to PSG around the time the two clubs met in the competition last season.

The former Lille star Hazard has never been interested in a move back to France with PSG, but fuelled speculation by giving a post-match interview in the shirt of the Ligue 1 club after Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat in Paris.

Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, insisted last week that Hazard would sign his new contract “soon” and efforts have been increased on both sides this week to make sure that his long-term future is secure at Stamford Bridge.

Hazard has so far won just the Europa League at Chelsea, but the Belgian will be optimistic about winning more titles this season as the club remain in four competitions.

Media reports this morning have suggested that Eden Hazard, last season’s Player of the Year, is soon to be offered a new Chelsea contract.
Mourinho concluded the conference at Cobham by giving an update on the Belgian winger’s future.

‘He’s obviously a player we want to keep. In spite of the fact he already has a long-term contract,
because he is as young as he is it’s true that Chelsea are trying to have an agreement with him over a new contract.

‘It’s also true because Eden made public, even before the World Cup, that he wants to stay and he wants to be here for more years.
It will be a question of time but it will end with a new contract.

Eden Hazard: Chelsea forward to sign new contract 'within month'

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard could sign a new contract within a month and develop into "one of the greatest players of his generation", according to manager Jose Mourinho.

The 23-year-old Belgium international, who joined from Lille in 2012, has three years left on his current deal.

"It's a question of time - one more month - but we will end up with a new contract," Mourinho said.

"He wants to stay and commit for many years."

The Portuguese described Hazard as a "fantastic" player who is keen to develop - potentially into one of the "greats".

"We think he can and we are very proud that he thinks Chelsea is the perfect environment for him to have that evolution," Mourinho said.

"We have big hopes that he will go from a top player to reach higher levels."

He was criticised by Mourinho for a lack of defensive awareness after Chelsea were knocked out of last season's Champions League by Atletico Madrid.

However, speaking ahead of Wednesday's Champions's League Group G match against Schalke at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho said Hazard had since worked hard to develop his game.

Hazard close to agreeing record new Chelsea deal



Eden Hazard is close to agreeing a new contract that will make him the best-paid player in Chelsea's history, Goal understands.

Goal has learned that Hazard has been offered a deal worth just over ?250,000-a-week plus performance-related bonuses.

The new deal would make him the highest paid player in the club's history, above current top earner Cesc Fabregas, whose total package is believed to be worth ?250,000-a-week.

Jose Mourinho sanctioned the improved deal after having a heart-to-heart with the 23-year-old at the end of last season.

Mourinho had been concerned about Hazard's willingness to work for the benefit of the team,

particularly in light of comments from the player in which he criticised the team's reliance on his own creative powers.

Goal understands that firm words were proffered from the manager

but Mourinho was satisfied with Hazard's attitude and moved to ease fears the fan favourite could be tempted into a big-money transfer.

Hazard, whose current deal expires in 2017, subsequently opened contract talks with Chelsea in June after being persistently linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking at the time, Hazard said: "I am staying at Chelsea 100 per cent.

Of course in football you never know but I am under contract with Chelsea and want to stay there. It is only the beginning of talks right now so we have time."

The new deal for the No.10, who has started all four of Chelsea's matches this season, is expected to be tied up in the coming weeks.

Chelsea confirmed last week that Thibaut Courtois had also agreed a new five-year contract.
