FIFA rejects Luis Suarez appeal against ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini

FIFA has rejected an appeal from Luis Suarez against his four-month worldwide ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini.

Suarez and the Uruguayan Football Association challenged the ban -

and a nine-match international suspension - handed out after the striker bit Chiellini during his country's World Cup game against Italy.

Uruguayan FA president Wilmar Valdez called the sanctions "totally exaggerated", but FIFA's Appeal Committee has now upheld the original decision.

A FIFA statement read: "The Appeal Committee has decided to reject the appeals lodged by both the Uruguayan player Luis Suarez

and the Uruguayan FA, and to confirm the decision rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on 25 June 2014 in its entirety.

"The terms of the decision taken by the FIFA Appeal Committee were communicated to the player and the Uruguayan FA today."

Suarez, who is expected to leave Liverpool for Barcelona in the near future, can still take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

FIFA head of media Delia Fischer added: "The relevant decision is not yet final and binding,

i.e. an appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport is still possible by the player and/or the Uruguayan FA, subject to certain conditions."

The disciplinary committee's initial decision took into account there had been no remorse from Suarez, and the fact it was the third time he had been involved in biting an opponent.

After lodging his appeal, Suarez did then issue a formal apology to Chiellini and vowed never to bite anyone again.

Appeals of Suarez and the Uruguayan FA rejected, sanctions upheld



The FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to reject the appeals lodged by both the Uruguayan player Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan FA,
and to confirm the decision rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on 25 June 2014 in its entirety.

The terms of the decision taken by the FIFA Appeal Committee were communicated to the player and the Uruguayan FA today.

The relevant decision is not yet final and binding, i.e. an appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS)
is still possible (cf. art. 67 par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes) by the player and/or the Uruguayan FA, subject to certain conditions.

烏拉圭前鋒蘇亞雷斯於今屆世盃分組賽對意大利，咬向基亞連尼，被國際足協（FIFA）裁定罪成，判禁止參予世界足球活動4個月及停賽9場，烏拉圭足總雖然就事件，向FIFA提出上訴，但今日最終被駁回，維持原判。蘇亞雷斯仍然可以向體育仲裁法庭，再次提出上訴。

Luis Suarez's lawyer will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas)
against the four-month ban imposed by Fifa on the Uruguay striker, calling it "draconian, totalitarian and fascist".
Suarez was banned for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.
An initial appeal against the 27-year-old's ban was rejected by Fifa.
Speaking before Suarez's move to Barcelona from Liverpool, Suarez's lawyer Alejandro Balbi said: "We hope they revoke this sanction."

Suarez and the Uruguayan Football Federation had appealed against Fifa's sanctions,
which include a ban on "all football-related activities" for four months,
a nine-match ban from international football, and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs (£66,000).
As part of the ban, Suarez cannot train with his club and is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium,
although players' union Fifpro argues the details "lack clarity"."[It] is blatantly draconian, totalitarian and fascist," Balbi told Spanish radio station Cope.
"The right of a footballer to work is being violated, and football should be worried about that.
The nine international games may seem excessive, but the fact that he can't watch a game of football, or train or carry out his job - we are talking about unpleasant things."

Ordinarily, Cas would sit and hear the matter while the player adhered to the terms of his ban.
However, as the World Cup is still taking place,
Suarez's legal team could apply to the Cas 'ad-hoc' division, which exists for the duration of the tournament to hear matters such as this.
