Messi equals La Liga goalscoring record



Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has equalled La Liga's long-standing goalscoring record with his strike against Sevilla at Camp Nou on Saturday.

The Argentine struck with a fantastic free-kick in the 22nd minute to reach 251 goals in the Primera Division and match the mark set by former Athletic Bilbao hero Telmo Zarra in 1955.

Zarra's 251 goals came in 277 games, while Messi's have arrived in 289 matches.

The Basque forward, who also netted 20 in 20 appearances for Spain, was 35 by the time he made it to 251.

Messi, at 27 and with many years still ahead of him, could yet go on and score well over 300 goals in La Liga.

The Argentine is already Barca's all-time top goalscorer and now has 366 strikes in all competitions for the Catalan club.
