Roque Santa Cruz undergoes medical ahead of Cruz Azul move

Malaga striker Roque Santa Cruz arrived in Mexico on Monday, where he’s already undergone his appropriate medical exam and signed his new contract as he completes his move to Cruz Azul.

Santa Cruz played his final game with Malaga this past weekend in a win against Elche, and while he refused to confirm the move, he was on the next flight out to Mexico to complete the newest chapter in his career.

Malaga will make ?500,000 from the transfer of the 33-year-old, who will become one of the highest paid players in the Mexican league, where he is expected to make two million dollars (1.6 million euros), 326,000 euros more than Ronaldinho.

During his two-and-a-half seasons with Malaga, Santa Cruz was one of the most respected members of the club on and off the pitch and while he leaves behind many adoring fans,

he is looking forward to the new challenges that await him in Mexico.

“There are a lot of people who think I’m playing the best football of my career and that makes me feel very comfortable and happy to be able to come to Cruz Azul.

I’ve been playing a lot in this first half of the season and that gives me a lot of confidence that I can fulfill expectations.

“I’m coming for the competition, because Mexican has a much more competitive league and there’s a different feeling of playing here, where I know that there’s a lot more pressure to have success and to play well.

“I know that Cruz Azul has had a lot of Paraguayan players over the last few years, I know the finals they’ve played in and unfortunately they’ve lost.  

I hope I can contribute something to my teammates and allow them to do well.”

Santa Cruz went on to add that he had two offers from MLS, but turned them down to play for Cruz Azul, who are fresh off their Club World Cup spell, where they finished fourth.

Cruz Azul have already listed Santa Cruz as having passed his medical ahead of his official move, which will likely be confirmed on Tuesday.

Málaga confirm transfer of Roque Santa Cruz to Cruz Azul


Malaga have confirmed the transfer of Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz to Mexican side Cruz Azul, after the 33-year-old flew to Mexico City to undergo his medical immediately following last weekend’s win over Elche.

Santa Cruz then traveled to his native Paraguay to celebrate Christmas with his family while the two side’s ironed out the details of the transfer.

Malaga and Cruz Azul both confirmed the transfer on Monday morning, while the Andalusian wished the striker all the best and showed their gratitude for his two and a half years of service to the club.

Málaga Club de Fútbol and Cruz Azul Fútbol Club have reached an agreement for striker, Roque Santa Cruz (Asunción, 16/08/1981) to join the Mexico-based side during the winter transfer window. Santa Cruz has been with the Martiricos Club for the past two and a half seasons, and has left his mark in Blue and Whites’ history. He scored the winning goal against Porto FC which saw the team qualify to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, and the Paraguayan international has been one of the ‘Malaguista’ team’s star players, known for his great charisma and professionalism. Málaga CF would like to wish Roque Santa Cruz every success in this new chapter of his career.

Santa Cruz is expected to become the highest paid player in the Mexican League surpassing the wages of former Barcelona star Ronaldinho.
