Zola appointed as Cagliari's new head coach Cagliari have appointed Gianfranco Zola as their new head coach. The 48-year-old has been out of management for over a year after he resigned as head coach of Watford in December 2013. Zola was installed as the favourite
to replace Zdenek Zeman, who was sacked by Cagliari on Tuesday following a run of one win in 11 Serie A games. Pierluigi Casiraghi, whose playing career ended at Chelsea after just 15 appearances due to a cruciate ligament injury, has been named as Zola’s assistant.
A statement from Cagliari read: “Both will put their international experience and their winning mentality at the disposal of the club and the team to get the results that all the fans of Cagliari deserve.”
After making 312 appearances for Chelsea, Zola returned to his native Sardinia in 2003 to play for Cagliari before retiring two years later.
