Hatem Ben Arfa has signed for Ligue 1 side Nice 24 hours after having his contract cancelled by Newcastle.

The fans favourite fell out of favour at the Magpies before an unsuccessful loan spell at Hull,

who terminated the deal early after coach Steve Bruce was unimpressed with the player's attitude - and his contract at St James' Park was then terminated on Sunday.

Ben Arfa, 27, has signed an 18-month contract in the south of France and been handed the number four shirt,

marking his return to Ligue 1 almost four-and-a-half years after leaving Marseille for the Premier League.

He revealed he spoke with club director Julien Fournier, under whom he worked at OM, and close friend Mathieu Bodmer before joining them at Nice.

He told L'Equipe: "I also spoke to the coach (Claude Puel), I liked his integrity and his approach to football and within 10 minutes, my choice was made.

Even if Real Madrid had called at that moment, my mind was made up!

"There are people here who trust me, who do not judge me as some people want to judge me through the press.

"I wanted to return to France, where I grew up. At Nice, I think I can express myself. I am coming here to enjoy myself, to help the club improve with my qualities, and to win."

Premier League: Nice agree loan deal for Newcastle's Hatem Ben Arfa

French club Nice have agreed a loan deal for Newcastle's Hatem Ben Arfa, subject to a medical.



Ben Arfa was scheduled to return to training on Tyneside next week after Hull City manager Steve Bruce decided to terminate his loan period on Humberside.

Despite lauding the player's qualities on his arrival back in August, Bruce soon fell out with Ben Arfa, who made just eight appearences for City and has been training on his own in France in order to maintain his fitness.

The 27-year-old had suffered a similar fate on Tyneside, where he had been frozen out of the first team picture by Alan Pardew, having failed to sustain the highly-favourable impression he had made on his arrival from Marseille in 2010.

Nice are 11th in Ligue 1, just three points off the relegation places. Barring any unforeseen hitches, the deal should be confirmed after a medical next week.

A Nice statement read: "We have reached an agreement in principle with Hatem Ben Arfa. The France international will have a medical on Monday prior to signing with Le Gym."

Newcastle United have cancelled former France winger Hatem Ben Arfa's contract with immediate effect.

The 27-year-old is poised to join Nice on a short-term contract.

A statement on the club’s official website read: "Newcastle United can today confirm that Hatem Ben Arfa and the club have reached an agreement to terminate the contract between both parties with immediate effect by mutual consent. Newcastle United wishes Hatem all the best for his future."

Ben Arfa joined Newcastle from Marseille in 2010, initially on loan before signing permanently the following summer despite an injury-ruined first season in England.

He became a fans' favourite after a string of spectacular goals and inspirational performances in 2012 and continued to show flashes of his best form.

But his attitude and fitness came under question and he joined Hull on loan in September of this season.

Transfer news: Nice face problems in bid for clearance for Hatem Ben Arfa

Hatem Ben Arfa’s planned move to Nice has met a hitch after the French club revealed that FIFA's rules may prevent the player from representing them this season.

The former Newcastle man could therefore be in limbo due to a clause in FIFA's transfer regulations which states that a player cannot represent more than two clubs in the same campaign.

Ben Arfa joined Nice last Monday but had to sit out last weekend’s win over Lorient while he awaited international clearance.

The 27-year-old played eight times for Hull while on loan there earlier this season and FIFA has now ruled that an appearance for Newcastle’s U21 side will count as an official match.

He scored for the Magpies' U21s in a 5-2 win over Reading back in August, but Nice had previously expressed their belief that “sporting logic” would prevail and that Ben Arfa would be allowed to represent them.

However, the club have now released a statement on their website which reads: “OGC Nice have received a copy of a correspondence sent by FIFA to the FFF (French Football Federation).

“The international federation responded to the question posed by the French federation regarding a match played by Hatem Ben Arfa with Newcastle U21s.

"Contrary to the position of the English (Football Association), it appears that for FIFA the match in the U21 Professional Development League 'must be considered as official in the sense of the regulation' and 'must therefore be taken into consideration in determining the application of article 5.3 of the regulation' on the status and transfer of players."

But Nice added that the "decision rests with the French authorities (the FFF)" and not football's governing body.

Article 5.3 of FIFA's regulations on the status and transfer of players states: "Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season"

“During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs."

And a FIFA spokesman had said earlier: “Our services received an information request from the French Football Federation concerning the player Ben Arfa relating to art. 5 par. 3 of the regulations on the status and transfer of players.

"We can confirm that today we have responded to the FFF regarding their information request."

Ben Arfa has been capped 13 times by France but Hull decided to terminate his season-long loan deal early and the player then had his Newcastle contract terminated by mutual consent.

NICE STILL HOPEFUL OF BEN ARFA DEAL

French club Nice have not given up hope of coaxing FIFA into a U-turn over Hatem Ben Arfa after the world governing body put a block on him playing again this season.

The 27-year-old playmaker, a free agent after his release from Newcastle, joined the Cote d'Azur side last Monday but was not available for Saturday's win over Lorient as he awaited international clearance.

FIFA's transfer regulations state a player cannot play for more than two clubs in the same season.
Ben Arfa's appearance for Newcastle's under-21 team on August 25, before moving on loan to Hull, was considered an official match by FIFA, which barring a challenge to the decision will count him out of Nice duty this season.

Hatem Ben Arfa angry at Nice move hold-up by Fifa

Midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa has voiced his frustration at Fifa preventing Nice from registering him.

The 27-year-old joined the Ligue 1 club on an 18-month deal after his loan at Hull City ended and his Newcastle United contract was terminated.

The world governing body's transfer rules prevent a player from appearing for more than two clubs in one season.

"I do not understand why they would try to stop me from playing in France, my home," he said.

"Why always try to create problems where there are none?"

Ben Arfa played eight games for Hull and one for Newcastle's Under-21s earlier this season, with Fifa ruling the latter to be an official match.

"I have only one desire - to play again on the pitches of Ligue 1, to have fun with my team-mates, and to give pleasure to the fans who have welcomed me as ever," he added.

The France international, a free agent after his release from Newcastle, joined Nice on 5 January, but was not available for Saturday's 3-1 win against Lorient as he awaited international clearance.

The delay centred around article 5.3 of Fifa's regulations  on the status and transfer of players, which states: "Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season.

"During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs."

A statement on Nice's website  confirmed the club had received a copy of correspondence sent by Fifa to the French Football Federation.

It said that contrary to the position of the Football Association in England, Fifa had classed the U21 match for Newcastle United as "official".

French league legal officials are to look at the case on Tuesday, the club said.

Hull cancelled the player's loan deal after he fell out of favour with manager Steve Bruce.

Newcastle confirmed the day before he joined Nice that both parties had reached an agreement to terminate his contract with immediate effect and by mutual consent.

BAD NEWS FOR BEN ARFA

It looks as though Hatem Ben Arfa season's is effectively over as FIFA have ruled he has appeared in competitive games for Hull City and Newcastle United this season, so cannot join a third team in the same campaign.

The French authorities asked FIFA to clarify whether the Under-21 match he played for Newcastle at the start of the season counted as official, and they have said it does.

"We can confirm that the decision was notified to the French Football Federation (FFF) following a request for clarification," said a FIFA spokesman.
"This decision stipulates that matches in the English Under-21 championship are considered to be official matches under FIFA rules."

The French Football League say they have banned Ben Arfa from playing for Nice this season but the league's judicial commission said they would allow the player to train with the Ligue 1 club.
