Manchester United have moved a step closer to securing David de Gea on a new contract on the very day they confirmed the arrival of his new No 2 Victor Valdes.

United have handed Valdes an 18-month deal with the option of an extra year's extension and Old Trafford manager Louis van Gaal confirmed that the 32-year-old will slot in as the club's No 2 goalkeeper.

However, it is the future of De Gea that is concerning many fans and it is understood that United are now confident of agreeing a lucrative new deal with the 24-year-old very soon.


Sportsmail recently reported that United and De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes wanted to conclude a deal quickly and sources at the club have now confirmed that the matter is moving rapidly in the right direction.

De Gea is now recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in the game and only has 18 months left on his contract at United.

Indeed his compatriot Valdes suggested on signing his own deal that De Gea now has no peers in world football.

Valdes, speaking to MUTV, said: 'I think now, at the moment, he is the best goalkeeper in the world.

'His performance every day and in every game shows everybody that his level is very high. He has had a great year and it is very nice. Now I think he is the best goalkeeper in the world.'

On the anticipated rivalry, Valdes added: 'I am here to help everybody. Always in my career, I have played to help my team-mates, to help my coach and to help everybody.

I am a part of the team and I am not a problem, I am just a part of the team.'

Manchester United transfer news: Iker Casillas warns Real against signing David de Gea



Iker Casillas has warned Real Madrid against signing United goalkeeper David de Gea months after competitor Diego Lopez's exit.

Lopez, signed by Jose Mourinho from Sevilla two years ago, replaced Casillas as Real's No.1 and even retained his place in the majority of La Liga games under Carlo Ancelotti.

However, Lopez was sold to AC Milan in the summer and although Costa Rica World Cup hero Keylor Navas was brought in, Casillas has regained his form after two average seasons.

De Gea, heavily linked with a Real move, has emerged as Casillas' successor at club and international level but the three-time Champions League winner hinted he would not welcome De Gea's return to Madrid.

"I told them that I must play or go," Casillas said, referring to his rotation saga with Lopez.

"The only thing is that if you start the season and you’re not playing, you must understand and respect the coach's decision to choose someone else. I want to play, but I’ve never demanded to play.

"The club have behaved in a very loving way. They have always tried to motivate me during difficult times. I’m not thinking about June, only the next morning.

"At the end of the day, I’ve received so much [from Madrid]. I’m back focused on enjoying my time here,

I feel important again and hope to exploit the opportunities I get."

Casillas' contract at Real expires in two-and-a-half years and he is "realistic" about what might unravel at the Bernabeu.

"I’ll be 36 by the time my contract ends in 2017," Casillas, now 33, added.

"I need to be realistic. At that age, things must slowly be considered.

"I hope the club tells me that they want me to continue, but I think I should go step by step."

Louis van Gaal expects David De Gea to sign new Manchester United deal

Louis van Gaal says he expects David De Gea to stay at Manchester United beyond the end of his current contract.

Van Gaal's first-choice goalkeeper has 18 months to run on his deal and has been persistently linked with a return to Spain.

But the United manager insists nothing should be read into his decision to sign free agent Victor Valdes, the former Barcelona keeper who has been training at Carrington after a long-term injury.

"I think there is no problem for (De Gea) to sign," he said. "When you are a (regular) player, then probably you are the best, and then the manager is very happy that a player that is fixed in the line-up will stay."

And Valdes, who agreed an 18-month deal this week, has been warned he faces a huge challenge to get in front of his younger compatriot.

"Nobody is happy to be No 2 and he has to have ambition to beat David De Gea - but it shall be very hard for him," Van Gaal said.

"David de Gea has developed himself in the six months that I've been here very much. I'm very pleased with his development."

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has reiterated his desire to keep David de Gea at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal concedes the 24-year-old goalkeeper may be tempted to return to Spain as a replacement for Iker Casillas, who is entering the final years of his career at Real Madrid, but hopes he can be persuaded to stay.

De Gea, who won United's player of the year award last year, has been outstanding again this season, rescuing United on a number of occasions.

The former Atletico Madrid stopper has 18 months left on his current contract but Van Gaal would not reveal how talks are progressing with the Spain international.

"I think that is a question between the player and the board of Manchester United," Van Gaal said. "Everything is possible in the world of football. We want to keep him."

Van Gaal brought in Victor Valdes, who provides him with a ready-made replacement if De Gea should leave, but the Dutchman expects to be quiet before the transfer window closes on Monday.

United signed Libyan Sadiq El Fitouri from Salford City on Friday but that deal is expected to be their last incoming move of the January window.

But Anderson, Wilfried Zaha, third-choice 'keeper Anders Lindegaard and Darren Fletcher could all leave Old Trafford by close of business on Monday.

Van Gaal added: "No. I read every day that I am interested in players. I am not interested in players. I have said we are selling or letting players go.... but you never trust me."

Manchester United are holding talks over a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea, according to his agent Jorge Mendes.

De Gea, 24, has been repeatedly linked with Real Madrid with a little over a year remaining on his existing deal, which was signed when he joined United from Atletico Madrid in an £18million deal in 2011.

Speculation over his future increased after United signed former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer, with manager Louis van Gaal saying he wants De Gea to stay but remaining non-committal over the progress of talks.

However, Mendes, appearing on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser on Sunday evening, said suggestions of a deal with Madrid are wrong and that talks had begun with United.

"It's not true that the deal is done," Mendes was quoted as saying by AS.

"I am negotiating his contract renewal but we haven't signed anything yet. As of this moment, we will see what happens.

"We're holding talks and at this moment, it seems he could continue with United, but as I say, we haven't signed anything yet."

Louis van Gaal says Manchester United have offered David de Gea "a lot of money" in a bid to keep the goalkeeper at Old Trafford.

De Gea is in the running for the PFA Player of the Year award after an impressive season but links with Real Madrid have been a recurring theme in recent weeks.

In January Van Gaal said he expected the 24-year-old to extend his current deal, which expires at the end of next season. But three months on there are no signs of progress.

When asked how negotiations were progressing, Van Gaal said: "It can always happen. I am not the boss. I want him to stay. The player is the boss - he can say 'yes' or 'no'.

"You will have to ask David de Gea (if he is staying), not me. He has to sign. We have offered him a lot of money."

As to new signings this summer, Van Gaal refused to be drawn on Memphis Depay, saying only: "I don't discuss it with the media."

The club are however closing on £21.5m deal with Borussia Dortmund for midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, according to Sky sources.

Van Gaal - speaking before Sky Sports News HQ broke the news of an imminent deal for Gundogan - said: "It's dependable on the market. It's not so easy as you think. OK, Manchester United is coming and can buy a player. It's not like that.

"Of course it's an advantage (to start early) but it's also dependable on the market, which players are free, which players want the clubs in the world to sell. It's not so easy and I don't want to buy every player.

"It has to fit in the profile of the positions in my philosophy. In the end the player has to decide and not the manager and not the manager of the selling club."
