Radamel Falcao will be playing for one of the best teams in the world next season - even if that isn't Manchester United, according to his agent.

The 28-year-old signed from Monaco in a £6m season-long loan in September but has scored just three goals.

United have until May to activate a £40m buy-out clause but it is not certain they will proceed.

"The truth is, right now, we don't know what will happen," said Falcao's agent Jorge Mendes.

Falcao has already decided he will not be returning to Monaco. Ideally, he would prefer to stay at United.

However, Falcao did not even make Louis van Gaal's 18-man squad for the 1-0 home defeat by Southampton on 11 January.

United boss Van Gaal said afterwards there was no injury problem and the decision was based purely on his selection of the players he felt were best suited to the game.

The move has perplexed and angered those close to the player, who has scored three times in 13 appearances for United, only eight of which have been starts.

"It is very difficult for Manchester United fans," said Mendes.

"They have an absolutely brilliant player, one of the very best in the world, who would without any doubt play 90 minutes of the match, every time, with any other club.

"What we do know is that he will play in one of the very best clubs in the world next season, whether that is Manchester United or not."

Daley Blind returned to play 90 minutes on Sunday after injuring a knee in November.

"The places in the team are expensive, and the manager has said that as well," he said. "So you have to train, every day, very hard to show yourself and show that you really want to play."

Fears Falcao is still struggling with the knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup have been dispelled, but the striker has struggled with a calf injury this season.

Monaco drastically cut back their spending in the summer, with Falcao and fellow countryman James Rodriguez just two of 21 players to leave.

Rodriguez - golden boot winner at last summer's World Cup - joined Real in July for £71m.

Manchester United have decided not to keep Radamel Falcao following the end of his season-long loan from Monaco.
The Colombian, who missed Sunday's 0-0 draw with Hull because of injury, scored just four goals in 29 matches.
United did not take up a reported £43.2m option to buy the 29-year-old, who failed to net in his last 13 games.
"Falcao is a top professional and a good human being. I would like to wish him well for the future," Van Gaal told the club's website.
The former Porto and Atletico Madrid striker's last goal came against Leicester on 31 January.
The South American, who missed the 2014 World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury in January last year, made a point of waving to the United fans when he was substituted in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on 17 May, in what proved to be his last appearance.
It is the first decision in what is expected to be a busy summer for Van Gaal, who will look to reshape a squad he has consistently said is not balanced.
And while the 63-year-old is ready to go on an extended holiday to Portugal, after spending most of last summer guiding the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup, he intends to remain in touch with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
"I am the manager," he said. "I have to decide which players are to go and which have to come. That is a process. It is not so easy. It is waiting for clubs to agree or not.
"It is hard work, but more for Ed Woodward than me. I go on holiday but I will always be in contact."
There was no update on the future of goalkeeper David de Gea, who missed the Hull game after failing to recover from a hamstring injury.
"He has to say something, not I," said Van Gaal when asked about the Spaniard.

Manchester United have told striker that Radamel Falcao that his time at Old Trafford is over.
Sportsmail can reveal that United manager Louis van Gaal informed Falcao of the club's decision at a meeting that took place in the last 48 hours.
Falcao has now instructed his representatives to look for other clubs in the Barclays Premier League and is understood to be willing to take a drop in wages to find another English club.
If possible, he would like to move to London.
The Colombian international wanted to stay at United but Van Gaal told him that his record of four goals in 29 appearances during his season on loan from Monaco wasn't enough to justify his retention.
The 28-year-old - who seemed to wave goodbye to the crowd at Old Trafford after last Sunday's game against Arsenal - believed that he would be better next season if he was given a full pre-season to work on fitness.
However Falcao will now head off to the Copa America after today's final United league game at Hull knowing that his time at United is definitely at an end.
In meetings this week Van Gaal will also tell defenders Rafael and Jonny Evans that they are available for transfer this summer while winger Nani and goalkeeper Anderson Lindegaard also have no future at Old Trafford.

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev claims Manchester United bosses have yet to decide whether they will sign Radamel Falcao on a permanent deal in the summer.

Colombia striker Falcao joined United on a one-year loan deal in September but has failed to shine during his time at Old Trafford - scoring just four goals in 25 appearances for the Manchester club this season.

Falcao's indifferent form has led to suggestions that his future lies elsewhere and Vasilyev revealed on Tuesday that United are keeping their options open, for the moment at least.

"I saw Manchester United leaders last Sunday and they have not yet decided if they will exercise the option (to sign Falcao permanently," Vasilyev told French daily newspaper Nice-Matin.

"It's not his best season but they retain the opportunity to talk at the end of the season. We are not in any further negotiations for the moment, even if big clubs are interested.

"The decision is in Manchester, then we will talk the player to find out what he wants."

Monaco spent a reported £50million to sign Falcao from Porto in May 2013 and he went on to score nine goals in 17 Ligue 1 games during the first half of the 2013-14 campaign before suffering a season-ending knee injury in January 2014.

Falcao recovered in time to be included in Colombia's 30-man provisional World Cup squad but missed the tournament altogether when he was left out of Jose Pekerman's final 23-man squad.

The Colombian striker in understood to have indicated his intention to leave Old Trafford - after being largely being frozen this season.

Notably he is said to have come to the decision before being asked to play for the under 21s earlier this month.

The 29-year-old has been frustrated by his lack of first team opportunities - and was particularly disappointed at being an unused substitute in the recent games against Newcastle and Arsenal.

United are yet to publicly declare their intentions for a man once considered one of the deadliest strikers in world football.

But Falcao appears to have taken the decision out of their hands and is due to return to Monaco ahead of a permanent move elsewhere.

Valencia and Juventus have both been linked with him, while his agent Jorge Mendes claims he will sign for one of the top clubs in Europe, despite his troubles this season.

He has scored just four goals in 22 appearances for United and has generally looked a shadow of himself as he attempts to rediscover his finest form following career-threatening knee ligament damage last year.

Falcao’s professionalism has been exemplary since his deadline day move at the start of the season. But his experience in English football has been a miserable.

Last week his former agent and mentor Silvano Espindola revealed his turmoil at United.

“I am not going to tell you that he feels happy because he isn’t,” he said.

“We speak many times and we cry together. It is not an easy situation because every player wants to play and every goalscorer wants to score goals.”

Van Gaal maintains that Falcao can return to his former powers, but has been non-commital over his intentions.

It was generally believed his future would be determined by United. But his frustrations have prompted him to make the decision to try to rebuild his career away from Old Trafford.

Colombia manager Jose Pekerman has revealed his own concerns over one of his star players.

Falcao has been included in the squad for his country’s games against Bahrain and Kuwait over the next week.

Pekerman said: “It’s a huge problem that we need to resolve. This problem is as large as the sadness that Falcao is going through right now.

“I feel I need to support him because I understand how hard it is for him and the difficult moment he is experiencing.

“I want to work with him again and help him restore his confidence.

“I know Falcao’s strengths, his mentality and his fighting spirit and I’ve never doubted that he’ll come out the other side.

“He’s in a bad moment, but he’s looking after himself and this week is going to be very important for him.”
