Darren Fletcher joins West Brom from Manchester United

West Brom have signed Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher on a free transfer from Manchester United.

The 31-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at The Hawthorns with a 12-month option.

West Ham were also interested in signing Fletcher, but a move to Upton Park broke down last weekend.

Albion failed in deadline day moves to sign West Ham striker Carlton Cole and Norwich defender Martin Olsson, but kept Brown Ideye and Graham Dorrans.

Fletcher made 342 appearances for United but started only five times for the club after Louis van Gaal took over as manager in the summer.

The Scot, who recovered from chronic bowel disease ulcerative colitis to resume his career in December 2013, had been at Old Trafford since he was a schoolboy and helped the Red Devils win the Premier League title five times.

But with his contract set to expire in the summer he was granted a free transfer to help him find a new club in this transfer window.

"This is a fantastic new challenge for me in my career," Fletcher told West Brom's website.

"I've spent my career at Manchester United and it's all I've ever known. But I felt it was the right time to move and I'm not sentimental about doing that."

Fletcher is the second player signed by West Brom head coach Tony Pulis following the £4.75m capture of winger Callum McManaman from Wigan.

The Scotland captain will wear the number 24 shirt for the Baggies.

Albion had hoped to sign Cole and Olsson on a busy deadline day, with Dorrans set to join Norwich and Ideye linked with a move to Qatari club Al Gharafa.

But Cole was called back to West Ham when they did not sign Tottenham's Emmanuel Adebayor, and Olsson failed to arrive for a medical on time.

Chairman Jeremy Peace said: "We did not get all the business done that we might have but we are thrilled to bring in a player and a character of Darren's calibre.

""We were disappointed for Carlton because he was also excited about joining us but for reasons which were beyond our control we could not complete the deal. The same can be said for the proposal involving Martin Olsson and Graham.

"But we have always maintained that January is a difficult time to do business and we are very happy with the deals we have done."

Transfer news: West Bromwich Albion set to hold talks with Darren Fletcher

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is on his way to West Bromwich Albion for talks about a possible move, according to Sky sources.

Last week it looked like Scotland international Fletcher was set to join West Ham United, but that move fell through and West Brom have now emerged as a possible destination for the midfielder.

James Cooper, of Sky Sports, reported from Manchester this evening: “In the past half hour we have seen Darren Fletcher leave the training ground and I am led to believe he is on his way to West Brom.

“He will have to be quick, but I am imagine the roads will be a little freer than earlier in the day.

He is going to have talks there and a medical ahead of a proposed move.

“Fletcher’s association with Manchester United stretches back almost 20 years and he has gone through an awful lot here, both as a youngster and a first-team player.

“But it could be that he has played his final game for Manchester United.”

Manchester United's Darren Fletcher move to West Ham seems over with both managers saying negotiations have broken down.

Louis van Gaal confirmed on Friday that 30-year-old was having talks with the Hammers but the United boss told Sky Sports News HQ after Saturday's 3-1 win against Leicester: "I don't know what's happening because I thought Darren was signing.

"But at the end, they looked for a loan and that wasn't the agreement so I can't (see it happening)."

He later added: "When you allow your player to go to London for the medical, there is no problem. At the end there is no agreement, it is strange.

"I don't know what is happening there but the agreement is different there. On Saturday it is off."

Allardyce revealed after the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield that the move will not go ahead.

On the chances of reviving a Fletcher deal, Allardyce told SSN HQ: "It doesn’t look like it. It looks like it's broken down in negotiations."

West Ham were head of the queue to sign Fletcher with Spanish side Valencia and West Brom also interested in signing the Scottish midfielder before the transfer window closes.

Fletcher was named United vice-captain at the start of the season but has been unable to break into Van Gaal's first team this season.

The United boss hopes he can give the midfielder more playing time in the rest of the season.

"He is my third captain so it is not a problem for me (if he comes back)," Van Gaal added. "Manchester United just want to help him play more. For him now that is a big pity.

"We want to help Fletcher. That is my only concern. I am very happy he is coming back."

The Scot has made just 12 appearances for United this season, with the most recent being in the 2-0 win at Yeovil Town in the FA Cup first round.

Darren Fletcher: Man Utd midfielder having Hammers medical

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is undergoing a medical at Premier League rivals West Ham as he moves closer to a move to Upton Park.

United boss Louis van Gaal had already revealed the Scottish international, 31, was in talks with the Hammers.

"He is now in West Ham, so we have to wait and see," said Van Gaal on Friday. "He is my third captain so he is an important guy in the dressing room.

"I like him as a human being and a player, so we will miss him."

Fletcher has made only five starts under Van Gaal this season.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce says a deal to sign Darren Fletcher from Manchester United is "not dead yet".

Scotland captain Fletcher, 30, has been granted a free transfer to allow him to move to another club during the mid-season transfer window.

"It's still a possibility. But it's not absolutely certain," Allardyce said.

The West Ham manager, though, dismissed reports that he was looking to sign Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis or Burnley forward Danny Ings.

Asked if there was any truth in reports linking him with either player, Allardyce said: "No. I think that with us having Enner Valencia, Diafra Sakho, Carlton Cole and Andy Carroll, I've more than enough frontmen to cope with the demands of the rest of this season.

"In the summer, we'll see what happens but certainly at the moment we're fine with the four options we've got up front now."

Allardyce indicated on Tuesday that the signing of Fletcher would depend on whether the midfielder wanted to make the move.

Speaking on Thursday, the manager added: "We'd like a quality player of Darren's talent, if that's at all possible, but if it doesn't happen, we're not in a position where we desperately need players."
