Newcastle United: John Carver set to be confirmed head coach



Newcastle United are set to confirm John Carver as head coach until the end of the season.

Alan Pardew's former assistant, 50, will take charge of the team for the final 16 Premier League games.

The Newcastle board will seek to appoint a permanent successor to Pardew in the summer.

Pardew left to take charge of Crystal Palace earlier this month, with Newcastle since drawing one and losing three games under Carver.

They sit 11th in the Premier League ahead of Saturday's match at Hull City.

Newcastle drew 3-3 at home to Burnley in Carver's first game on 1 January before losing 1-0 at Leicester in the FA Cup third round.

They lost 2-0 at Premier League leaders Chelsea on 10 January and were defeated 2-1 at home by Southampton on 17 January.

Newcastle United will make Steve McClaren their No 1 target after confirming that John Carver will remain in charge until the end of the season.

Derby County boss McClaren has connections with the Newcastle hierarchy and is close to chief scout Graham Carr who, along with managing director Lee Charnley, has been tasked with finding the new head coach.

But their search to find Alan Pardew’s successor has been put off until the summer after McClaren declared his intention to remain with promotion-chasing Derby.
