Northern Ireland 1-1 Hungary: Last-gasp Lafferty strike keeps hosts top of Group F

Last Updated: 07/09/15 11:06pm

Northern Ireland were denied Euro 2016 automatic qualification on Monday night, but a late 1-1 draw with Hungary keeps them top of Group F.

However, the home team - who saw Chris Baird sent off with 10 minutes to go - needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Kyle Lafferty to cancel out Hungary defender Richard Guzmics' second-half opener at Windsor Park.

And that result means Michael O'Neill's side have been assured of at least a play-off place, but they must wait until October's qualifier at home to Greece to confirm their place at next summer's European Championship finals.

Northern Ireland made just the one change from the side that started Friday night's 3-1 win in the Faroe Islands, with Corry Evans coming in for the more attack-minded Niall McGinn.

O'Neill may have been wary of the visitors' recent upturn in form that had seen them unbeaten in their previous six matches heading to Belfast, the last five of which they had kept clean sheets in.

Either way, it was Northern Ireland who made the better start as they went in search of the early goal that would have settled the home fans' already frayed nerves.

However, despite dominating possession for large parts of the first period, while also being driven on by a raucous Windsor Park crowd, Northern Ireland found it hard to carve out any meaningful openings.

In fact, the closest the home team actually came to breaking the deadlock came when Reading midfielder Oliver Norwood tested Gabor Kiraly with a 30-yard free kick that the Hungary goalkeeper palmed away to safety.

Meanwhile at the other end, opposite number Michael McGovern was a virtual spectator before the break, with the only time the Hamilton Academical No. 1 was called into action coming when he made a brilliant close-range block to deny Krisztian Nemeth just past the half-hour mark.

However, it turned out that the former Liverpool forward had already strayed into an offside position before getting his shot away, meaning that the worst news for Northern Ireland in the first half was the early booking picked up by Lafferty meaning the striker will now miss his country's next qualifier against Greece.

The second period was far more eventful, with Hungary midfielder Zoltan Gera twice going close to breaking the deadlock, first with a flashing header and then with a shot from distance that flew just wide of McGovern's post.

The home team never appeared in danger of conceding, although they also barely threatened themselves, apart from two Norwood free-kicks that Kiraly was forced to gather.

But the contest really came to life in the final quarter of an hour when the visitors took a surprise lead following a terrible mistake by McGovern, who dropped Hungary captain Balazs Dzsudzsak's free-kick straight at the feet of Guzmics, who had no problems tapping home from virtually on the goalline.

And it seemed as though the home team's hopes were over when Baird was given two yellow cards by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir for fouls that happened within just a few seconds of each other.

That was, though, until Lafferty found himself in the right place at the right time in the third minute of injury time to tap home after Kiraly could not hold substitute McGinn's fierce drive from the edge of the area.

The result keeps Northern Ireland one point clear of Romania in Group F and four clear of Hungary ahead of a home match with Greece and a trip to Finland in October.

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Georgia: Jonathan Walters' second-half strike seals crucial three points

Last Updated: 07/09/15 11:32pm

Republic of Ireland kept their Euro 2016 automatic qualification hopes alive as Jonathan Walters' second-half strike helped them to a laboured 1-0 victory at home to Georgia on Monday night.

The home side put in a sluggish first-half display in what was billed as a must-win European Qualifier at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, and Martin O'Neill reacted by sending on Shane Long in place of the ineffective Robbie Keane after the interval.

The move certainly changed Republic of Ireland's fortunes and they finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute after Walters bundled the ball home at the near post after excellent work from Jeff Hendrick.

Ireland had Glenn Whelan and James McClean booked late on and both will miss the clash with Germany next month.

However, O'Neill will be delighted as his side held on for a crucial three points to move four points clear of Scotland - who lost 3-2 to Germany - in third and keep pace in the race for the top two spots in Group D.

Before the match, both manager O'Neill and captain Keane stressed the importance of the clash with Georgia, claiming it was a must-win game.

With fixtures against Germany and Poland to come, the pressure was on Ireland - who brought in Seamus Coleman for Cyrus Christie - and it showed.

Georgia were the team who looked more at home as Levan Mchedlidze burst into the penalty area in the 11th minute, but his weak right-footed shot failed to trouble Shay Given.

O'Neill's side were struggling to find any rhythm and it seemed to be making the crowd anxious, with Georgia comfortable in possession of the ball.

It took until the 30th minute for Ireland to look threatening as Hendrick clipped a lovely ball in behind the Georgia defence, but Keane failed to latch onto the pass.

Minutes later, the home side had their first real effort on goal as Coleman hit the target from the edge of the penalty area, forcing goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili into a smart save.

O'Neill was not happy with what he saw during the first 45 minutes and reacted by hauling off captain Keane at the interval and replacing him with Long.

The move had the desired effect for the hosts as they moved forward with more pace, creating openings for both Coleman and Whelan.

Next it was Robbie Brady threatening the vistors' defence, standing up a cross at the far post which just eluded a determined looking Walters.

Minutes later, Hendricks tested Revishvilli from distance and the goalkeeper was up to the task, parrying the ball away to safety.

The momentum was certainly building for Ireland and they finally broke the deadlock with 21 minutes remaining as Hendrick turned provider in superb style with 21 minutes remaining when he slipped between three red shirts before crossing for Walters to fire home at the near post.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, substitute Long might have made it 2-0 after substitute McClean had run on to Whelan's pass and drilled the ball across goal, but the Southampton striker failed to connect with his attempted shot.

McClean, who will miss his side's next fixture alongside Whelan through suspension, forced another excellent save from Revishvili with a rasping injury-time strike, but the points were already secure.

The Republic now trail second-place Poland by two points and could still clinch an automatic qualification spot, but could yet be caught by Scotland in the race for the play-offs.

However, a win in either of their remaining games at home to Germany and away in Poland would guarantee a play-off place at worst.

Scotland 2-3 Germany: Hosts' qualification hopes dashed in thriller

By Tom McKeown
Last Updated: 08/09/15 12:26am

Scotland's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2016 took a huge blow as they lost 3-2 to Germany in a thrilling encounter.

Thomas Muller put the visitors in front after 18 minutes at Hampden Park on Monday night but Scotland levelled within 10 minutes through a Mats Hummels own goal, only for Muller to score his second six minutes later.

James McArthur's fine strike made it 2-2 two minutes before the break, but Ilkay Gundogan fired in a 54th-minute winner to consign Gordon Strachan's men to their second defeat in five days.

Wins for Poland and the Republic of Ireland mean the Scots cannot finish in the top two of Group D, while they sit four points behind Martin O'Neill's side in the battle for the play-off spot.

The hosts started brightly, allowing Germany plenty of possession but pressing them well and not allowing them too much time on the ball.

But that seemed to dissipate quite quickly, and the world champions were in front in the 18th minute as Muller was allowed to run forward before his low effort took a big deflection off Russell Martin and rolled into the far corner.

It was a devastating blow as Strachan's men desperately needed a result to keep up their qualification hopes, but they were level 10 minutes later as Emre Can fouled Charlie Mulgrew just outside the box.

Shaun Maloney fired in the free-kick but Manuel Neuer could only parry it forward, and the ball hit Hummels before bouncing into the back of the net.

Scotland were only level for six minutes, though, as Muller bagged his second in the 34th minute. Can latched on to a loose ball and fired a first-time effort which Marshall parried up for Muller, whose header just crossed the line before Martin could clear.

Two minutes before the break the hosts levelled once again as a half-cleared corner fell to McArthur on the edge of the box, and the Crystal Palace midfielder first a first-time effort through a crowd of players and into the net before Neuer could react.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with Germany enjoying most of the possession, and they nearly went back in front soon after the restart as Mario Gotze latched on to Bastian Schweinsteiger's fine cross, only to be flagged for offside as he headed into the top corner.

But it was not long before they did go in front, as on 54 minutes Muller picked the ball up on the right-hand side before pulling a low cross back for Gundogan, who fired a powerful low shot in off the upright to put Germany back in front for the third time.

Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall had to work hard to keep the hosts in the game, saving well from Schweinsteiger's powerful effort before denying Gundogan a second with a strong parry from his long-range strike.

But it would not matter as Strachan's men could not battle their way back with another equaliser, and Scotland are now unable to catch Germany or Poland, while they lie four points behind the Republic of Ireland in the battle for third place in the group.

They must now hope for maximum points against Poland and Gibraltar in their remaining fixtures, although a win and a draw would be enough to secure a play-off place if Republic of Ireland lose to both Germany and Poland in their remaining games.
