Jesus Gamez likely to become signing number four as United look to add experience to their defence
Newcastle United are set to sign Atlético Madrid full-back Jesús Gámez. And United officials are hopeful that Gamez will fly into Newcastle to complete a deal in the next 24 hours. The Spaniard has been in talks with the Magpies for the past week and is ready to join Rafa Benitez’s Toon revolution. Gamez is a right-back, but has also been used as a left-back by Diego Simeone and can play in the heart of defence if needed. At 31, Gamez will bring some experience to Benitez’s back four with the player keen to taste life in England after spending his career with Malaga and Atletico. Gamez also won three caps for Spain Under-23s and was once courted by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
Last season Newcastle lacked leaders when it mattered, but Gamez brings with him the experience of being captain at Malaga.
Speaking about wearing the armband, Gamez said once: “Is it a responsibility being captain? Of course, it has responsibility, but I still don’t feel like a captain on the pitch, I like to give instructions to help my team mates.
“And when you get used to being captain you try to maintain the balance of the group to keep everyone happy.”
Benitez was eager to tighten up a defence that leaked 65 goals this season and are likely to be further defensive recruits to come.
