Atletico Madrid trying to get Diego Costa on the cheap - and the deal would cost Chelsea more than £50m
Atletico are so confident of getting their man they have drawn up a training programme to keep him match fit while he is not playing games

The Spanish giants are only offering £22m plus add-ons which is less than a THIRD of the £76m transfer fee offered by Chinese Super League club Tianjian Quanjian.

Costa's representatives are due to hold talks with Chelsea later this week with the player due back next week but wants his future resolved this weekend.

Spain striker Costa - who publicly revealed that Antonio Conte has told him he has no future at Chelsea - is desperate to join Atletico this summer and insists he will not go to China.

Costa, who has won two Premier League titles in three years at Chelsea, will be sold with no hope of the situation being resolved.

But Costa is even ready to go to Atletico, sit it out until their ban on signing players finishes in January and then play even though it is World Cup year.

Atletico are so confident of getting their man they have drawn up a training programme to keep him match fit while he is not playing games.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone is convinced Costa will be their player - even though Chelsea are likely to insist the fee is higher especially in the current transfer climate.

COSTA LATEST

More on the news that Atletico Madrid are expected to make an offer for the Chelsea striker Diego Costa this week.

Despite being Chelsea's top scorer last season, Costa was told last month by manager Antonio Conte that he was not in his plans for next season.

Costa wants to return to Atletico, even though he would not be able to play for them until January.

One option which Atletico have explored is signing Costa and loaning him to a Chinese club until the end of the year. The Chinese midseason window closes on 14 July.

Tianijin Quanjian were willing to pay Chelsea £76m for Costa in January, but Atletico believe they can sign him for less than half that figure now. Atletico sold Costa to Chelsea three years ago for £32m. Chelsea players return for preseason training on Monday and fly out for a tour of the Far East on 18 July.

Atletico Madrid set to make opening Diego Costa bid that could spare Antonio Conte an awkward reunion

Matt Law, football news correspondent
5 JULY 2017 • 8:43PM
Atletico Madrid are set to make their opening bid to re-sign Diego Costa in a move that could save the striker from an awkward reunion with Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte.

Sources in Spain on Wednesday night claimed Costa was “hours” from returning to Atletico, despite the fact the La Liga club must still agree a fee with Chelsea.

Should Atletico meet Chelsea’s asking price, which is thought to be around £40 million, then a transfer is expected to go through quickly. There have, however, been suggestions the Spaniards hope to re-sign Costa for £22m plus add-ons which would spark lengthy negotiations.

A quick deal would certainly appeal to Conte, who is due to return to work at Chelsea on Sunday with his squad returning for pre-season training 24 hours later.

Conte put Chelsea in an awkward negotiating position over Costa by telling the 28 year-old he is not part of his plans by text message, but the club are adamant they will not be bullied into accepting a deal they are not satisfied with.

Chelsea only plan to excuse Costa from attending the start of pre-season training if a return to Atletico is either complete or in the process of being agreed before Monday, otherwise he will be expected to be present.

Costa will have to sit on the sidelines until January if he rejoins Atletico because of the Spanish club’s transfer ban, although there is still interest from China in taking him until the New Year.

Costa is one of a number of situations Conte wants resolved as quickly as possible with Chelsea due to leave for their pre-season tour of China and Singapore on July 18. The team will play two friendlies before they fly, one of which will be behind closed doors.

Despite the fact Chelsea are getting ready to announce the arrival of central defender Antonio Rudiger and are finalising the signing of midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, Conte wants an additional five new players.

Chelsea are in talks with Juventus over a £60m move for left-back Alex Sandro, while Conte has told the club’s board that he would also like to sign right-back Danilo from Real Madrid.

As reported by Telegraph Sport, Conte instructed the Chelsea board that he wants striker Romelu Lukaku to replace Costa, whatever the cost, and would also ideally like another central defender and a forward who can play off the flank.

It remains to be seen whether or not all of Conte’s demands are met, but the 47 year-old must also sort out the futures of a number of last season’s title-winning first-team squad.

Manchester United want Nemanja Matic, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who will be allowed out on loan, is a target for Newcastle United among other clubs at home and abroad. Watford want to sign Nathaniel Chalobah.

Striker Michy Batshuayi and defender Kurt Zouma are waiting to find out their futures, with the duo likely to be allowed out on loan if replacements are signed. West Ham United still hope to get Batshuayi, despite their move for Javier Hernandez.

Striker Izzy Brown, who spent last season at Rotherham and Huddersfield, is expected to join Premier League new boys Brighton on a season-long loan after signing a new Chelsea contract.

Diego Costa has said goodbye to Chelsea team-mates

Matt Law, football news correspondent
6 JULY 2017 • 2:32PM
Diego Costa has started to say his farewells to his Chelsea team-mates with the Premier League champions facing the threat of suffering a striker crisis ahead of the new season.

Manchester United’s move for Chelsea’s top striker target Romelu Lukaku has left the London club in a difficult position, as they work to find out whether there is room to launch an 11th hour bid of their own.

Chelsea are yet to rule themselves out of the Lukaku race and have noted Everton’s denial that a deal with United is agreed. The Belgian had favoured a return to Stamford Bridge, which may yet be something Chelsea try to exploit.

Should they be forced to admit defeat, then Chelsea will have to switch targets and could renew their interest in Alvaro Morata, who they bid for last summer, or Alexis Sanchez, who Arsenal have insisted will not be sold to a Premier League rival. Torino’s Andrea Belotti is another option.

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte is due to return to work on Sunday and was understood to be anxious about the club’s striker situation, even before United made their £75million bid for Lukaku.

His decision to tell Costa that he is no longer part of his plans by text message looks increasingly ill-advised and has complicated Chelsea’s transfer plans.

With Atletico set to make their opening bid to re-sign Costa, the Spain international has got in touch with a number of his Chelsea team-mates to tell them he expects to return to his former club and is unsure whether he will be back at Chelsea for pre-season training which starts next Monday.

Chelsea will only excuse Costa from returning for pre-season if a move to Atletico is agreed or negotiations are advanced, which the 28-year-old clearly hopes is the case.

It remains to be seen, however, whether Chelsea are forced to try to broker a truce between Conte and Costa if they fail to land Lukaku.

That seemed inconceivable a couple of weeks ago, but Chelsea may yet be forced to explore all their available options, including keeping Costa, if Lukaku completes a move to United.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa will still be sold this summer despite Antonio Conte missing out on Romelu Lukaku
  • Lukaku choosing Manchester United will not stop Chelsea selling Diego Costa
  • The Belgian is poised to join Manchester United for £75m despite Blues links
  • There will be no healing of the rift between Costa and manager Antonio Conte

Romelu Lukaku’s decision to choose Manchester United will not stop Chelsea selling Diego Costa.
There appears to be no way of healing the rift between Costa and manager Antonio Conte and the striker wants to leave for Atletico Madrid, although Chelsea’s asking price will start at more than £60million.
The Premier League champions are not prepared to be bullied into a cut-price deal, though Costa has made it clear he is not interested in a transfer to anywhere other than his former club.
Atletico are preparing a bid but they do not want to pay more than £22m for the 28-year-old striker with only two years on his contract.
The Spanish club believe their negotiating stance was strengthened by Conte’s infamous text to Costa. Chelsea manager Conte sent a message at the end of last season to inform his top-scorer he was not part of his plans for the future.
This effectively rules out the option he might stay at Stamford Bridge as long as Conte is in charge. Even the loss of Lukaku, the manager’s number one target as a replacement centre-forward, will not change this outlook.
Costa will only consider a return Atletico, the club he left when he moved to London for £32m in 2014.

Atletico are serving a FIFA transfer ban which prevents them from registering any new players before the end of the year. Even if the Spanish club were to clinch a deal Costa could not play for them until January.
The notion of signing him and loaning him for six months is ruled out by FIFA regulations which state a player must be registered before he can go on loan.
It means the most probable outcome is a move to the Spanish capital where he will simply train until he has clearance to play.
Another solution is a contrived short-term transfer from Chelsea to another club and then to Atletico, his destination of choice, in January.

MORE ON COSTA

We understand Diego Costa has been given permission to miss the start of pre-season training at Chelsea.

Costa himself wants to go back to Atletico Madrid, but won't be able to play until next January due to their transfer ban.

Chelsea are looking for £60m, but Atletico are only willing to pay around £25m.

Will Costa return to training tomorrow? We understand he's being given time to sort out his future...
