Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao confirms loan move to Sporting Lisbon- Fabio Coentrao returns to Portugal on a season-long loan with Sporting Lisbon
- The 29-year-old first emerged as a talented defender for their rivals Benfica
- His time with Real Madrid has been severely blighted by a succession of injuries
Fabio Coentrao will attempt to revive his stalling career away from Real Madrid next season after announcing his arrival at Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan. The 29-year-old was limited to just six appearances for Real Madrid last season after struggling with a succession of injury problems which have plagued his career.
Sporting have given Coentrao the opportunity to prove he can still perform at the top level, with the player tweeting a picture of himself and his family in their famous Estadio Jose Alvalade.
The tweet read: 'Very happy to have the opportunity to play for this great club.'
Coentrao originally made his name with Sporting's great rivals Benfica before sealing a £26million move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2011, where he was originally tipped to challenge Marcelo for a place in the side.
But problems with form and fitness meant that, in five full seasons at the Bernabeu, he made just 106 appearances and never managed to play more than 20 games in a single season.
On loan at Monaco in the 2015/16 campaign, the left-back suffered five separate injuries before a serious hamstring problem ruled him out of the Euro 2016 campaign, which Portugal would go on to win.
Sporting Lisbon finished third in the Primeira Liga last season, 12 points behind champions Benfica and six points behind second-placed Porto.
