Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is set to sign a £350,000-per-week five-year deal at the club.

Spaniard De Gea, who joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has been the subject of long-term speculation linking him with a move back to Spain. A switch to Real Madrid broke down in 2015 due to an administrative error.

He has continually been linked to the Bernabeu since but is contracted at United until 2019.

The new deal is expected to be in place before the start of the World Cup with discussions due to begin this month, according to The Sun.

If he signs the new contract, De Gea will be behind Alexis Sanchez as the club's second-highest-ever earner.

Just last week De Gea admitted he does not feel he has the same 'respect and adoration' in his homeland Spain as he does in England.

'In England I have a great affection and respect that I do not notice so much here,' he said, according to Goal.

And now United are optimistic of keeping the shot-stopper on their books.

'The club want it sorted. It has to be done in their eyes,' a United insider said.

'They want David to go to the World Cup and come back knowing everything is settled.

'Zlatan leaving has freed up more wiggle room on wages and United don't want to drag it out.

'They want to show the world that David won't be leaving for anywhere. It's a real statement.'

De Gea will be looking to keep out rivals Manchester City on Saturday to prevent them from winning the league title.

David De Gea has signed a new long-term contract with Manchester United, keeping him at the club until at least June 2023. There is an option to extend for a further year.

David, 28, joined United in 2011 and has made 367 appearances so far.

During his time with the club, he has won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA Europa League and the Community Shield.

David De Gea said:

“It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour. Since I arrived here, I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.

“As one of the senior players in the squad, I want to support and lead in any way that I can to assist the younger players, so they know what it means to play here. I still feel that I have so much more to achieve at the club and I truly believe that Manchester United can build on the club’s tradition of success and reward our fans for their support.

De Gea’s deal is due to run out next summer

David de Gea is close to finally agreeing a new contract with Manchester United. The goalkeeper is on the verge of completing the details on terms in the region of the £290,000-a-week basic earned by Paul Pogba and the Spaniard expects to sign soon, it is understood.

De Gea is out of contract next summer so a new deal would allow United to protect an asset whose market price would rise to at least £80m.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær was charged, in part, with convincing key players that their future remained at United when appointed caretaker manager last December.

Anthony Martial signed again for the long term in January and should De Gea follow this would be viewed as further success by the club hierarchy. The Spain international joined United in the summer of 2011.
