Wolves are set to smash their transfer record with the £18 million capture of Middlesbrough winger Adama Traore before Thursday's deadline.

Adama is a priority target for Nuno Espirito Santo and Wolves remain in talks with Middlesbrough over a deal for the 22-year-old, who has a release clause.

Wolves have already failed with a £12m bid for the Spain U21 international - an offer which was well below the £18m figure required to sign him.

But Nuno believes the former Barcelona prodigy will prove a key player in the Premier League and Wolves are expected to trigger Adama's clause in the next few days.

Adama's hopes of a move to the Premier League appeared in danger last week when he suffered a partially dislocated shoulder in the pre-season friendly against Sunderland on Friday.

But it is understood he has now returned to light training and was running without problems at Middlesbrough's base on Thursday.

A deal for Adama would break Wolves' previous transfer record of £15m for midfielder Ruben Neves.

It is believed Wolves will complete the deal early next week and it can be revealed that Adama's former club, Aston Villa, are in line for a £3.6m pay-out when it goes through.

Villa inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause when they agreed to sell Adama to Middlesbrough in August 2016.

Nuno has already signed Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio, Joao Moutinho and Raul Jiminez this summer and is also keen to sign a centre-half before the transfer window closes.
